I want to add a comment here. The company i worked for in the late eighties put out a framing training manual. There was an article copied from Decor magazine that was discussing how to hire good framers. It said to look for women because they were neater and tidier than men and it also said they would accept less pay than a man. I was so offended. I took it up with the person at corporate who was in charge of the frameshop "education" since he had designed the manual. Even in the eighties I know it was illegal to discriminate based on sex. I could not believe the business I worked for would condone adding that to any official company manual. I know they consequently removed it from the manual claiming they hadn't read the whole article. Hopefully we've come a lot further than that, because I don't accept less pay and I promise you I am not very neat and tidy either.
I know this is a sexist remark but, in my experience, women seem to have more patience with detailed but repetitive tasks. Less easily frustrated. All the workers in our shop are women. The managers are men and are only useful when the matboard or glass shipment arrives. We love them dearly but they're only underfoot most of the time.
On the other hand I used to work with a guy whose mat carving was a sight to behold.
Mizz po' does most of the framing and that's good because she has developed better craftsmanship than me. (Was it Rachel or Rebecca who laughed at her poor husband who had to live with a fussy perfectionist?)
She's awesome at design but I do the engineering, such as making a hinged shadowbox for a pistol work just right.
and the heavy hauling, of course, when one of the sons can't be roped into it.
Who knew all these years that there was such a framer hidden inside the little schoolmarm and momma?
Lets see... there are two people in our shop... Linda Foote, and me. HMmmmmmmmmmmm......... My guess? We are both women.
Actually we did have a few guys working in our shop over the years, and even if they were good framers, I found that if they got bored, they were the first to become distructive. The guys were the only ones to take razer-blades to my wooden shelves. The girls would just doodle... normally on the scrap paper.
So... As for who moves the heavy stuff? That would be either me, or my truck drivers.
I voted when only 10 people had, now I want to see the results and can't do so unless I vote again, is that how presidents are elected!!! Just curious if it's still 50/50
Next person I hire is going to be a woman. Nicer to look at than a man.
seriously, though, there's I, my wife and a parttimer 21-yr old male who works with us. I notice that the women (and my percentage is about 80% female)seem to relate better to my wife than to either of us males. They seem to "chat" more, or be more at ease.
We had a wonderful young lady going for her PhD in forensic pathology, but she got called out of town like forever on a project and we haven't been able to get her back. The women really loved coming to her because she dressed way upscale and was a great designer.
Sounds sexist but, hey, I'm here to make money and I don't care how it sounds. I think women relate better to women especially with my customer composition (almost said "makeup")
