I just got a new roll of Finishguard/Printguard and I'm having a problem that I've never had before. Yellow colors in the photo are turning "hyper yellow", and whites are getting a yellow cast to them. Other colors don't seem to be affected, at least not noticeably.

My employee has been doing the mounting for these, and I don't know if the problem is a defective product, cheap product, or something in the mounting process that's causing the problem.

We're mounting in a Seal Masterpiece press, 225 deg. for about 4 minutes.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on here?

Do a couple of test pieces at lower temps to see if it still happens. Do one at 215, one at 205 and one at 195. This will at least give you an indication of whether it is the product or press temp issues.

We had this problem before with photos printed on an industrial Epson printer in our shop; we tried different temperatures and dwell times as well, and ultimately came to the conclusion it was a combination of the ink and the finish. We worked with the photo studio whom we work with on the problem and found it simply reacts to one another to cause it. That was about a year or so ago. We only have one customer who regularly laminates her photos now (most get glazing,) and we use the matte Finishgard on those; we've noticed that it doesn't affect the colour nearly as much, and it's a lot easier to position on those large photos (the lustre latches right onto the finish of the photo and disaster can ensue.)

Hope this helps. ^_^

Thanks Jeff, I'll do some test.

Cavalier, it's funny, my old product was the Luster, and I never had a problem. It's the ultra matte that I'm using now that is reacting. I've wondered if it's something chemically with certain ink colors.

I got a roll of the luster that did exactly what you said and returned it. It's supposed to be re-positionable. I ruined a couple of my customer's photos, then got it replaced (with the ultra matte). IMHO, that's a defective product - too much tack.
