I recently had some pictures printed on metallic paper. They look great but when I framed them with mat and under glass you see a lot of wavy reflections. Does anybody know why or have a fix for this problem???

_-IF they will take the heat , dry mount them for perfect flattness, and then use ( GASP ) reflection control glazing ????? just a thought.

They will not mount, metallic photo paper will take the wax off of even the best release paper on the market and leave you with dull spots.

I have DM a ton of metallic photo paper with no issue what so ever. I am guessing from what Jimmylea is describing we are talking about 2 different products.

Spray with vacuummount and use press on cold (this is assuming these are not 'valuable' prints & the customer has backups).

Is it similar to gelatin silver prints? I am not a photog. so this isn't a familiar product. I have DMed gelatin silvers (requested) with solid results.* That is a chemical reaction however and a digital print on that paper is (most likely) not as durable.

metallic paper

I am an amateur photo guy who mats and frames my own pictures. I have always used Rollataq adhesive pressure sensitive and never had any issues with prints on regular photo paper. I recently got some prints from Mpix which I matted and framed and all of them look very wavy when finished. Any help would be appreciated, different method perhaps????

Find someone to mount these with Kool Tack and Permalon. You will be pleased. I do this for a local photographer often and he uses the same Kodak Endura Metalic from Mpix. NO ORANGE PEEL!

I mount them all of the time. 165 for 60 seconds with release paper over them and a sheet of smooth matboard on top of that to prevent orange peel. The matboard should be heated to full temperature before beginning. I use the International Paper Foam Core Brand Heat Activated Board. It has a very thick coating of adhesive and activates at lower temps with shorter dwell times than most boards.

When I order the metallic prints from Mpix I just have them mount them when they print them so that if there is anything wrong they fix it right then and there.

I give this same advice to my customers too. I've attempted to mount these in my dry press but I always seemed to get hot spots on them even at a low temp.

I actually posted with a similar problem several months ago. The waving and bubbling gets worse with time. I have tried everything (including ordering them mounted from MPIX - came back w/orange peel.) Now I take them to someone local who mounts in a vacuum press - no heat - and so far so good.

I got so frustrated that I did a test and ordered the same print (with several different finishes) from 5 different online services. Two used kodak endura and two used fuji crystal. (Fuji doesn't have a metallic finish.) If you lie the photos down on a piece of mat, you see that the Kodak prints start to curl (a static electricity effect) while the others lie perfectly flat. So there must be something about that paper - if you want the metallic, you've got to vacuum mount.

P.S. I went so far as to send a sample to kodak, but they couldn't provide any insight. I might send them my test samples and see what they say.

Print on aluminum. It's pricy but WOW! Color explodes off of them. Also orange peel, warping, waving, and bubbling will be a problem of the past.

We use a cold roller and mount these onto ACM or similar substrates. I have noticed that we are planning some mounting test with the Metalicc AgX paper from Kodak in the next few weeks - I expect the results will still suggest we use Cold roller with Gudy 802 adhesive. Another probable solution would be a mild starch mix and vacuum press onto a porous surface (matboard/rag etc) which can be removed but should stay flat until picked off at the corner or the board is flexed...

I will try to remember to come back & post results if different than my expectations.

Thanks for the answer. I am not a professional just mounting pictures for myself. The problem is I have 10 x 15 picture and MPIX is mounting them on a 10x15 mat, so when I get them back I still need to mat and frame, how do I proceed. The frame is 16x20. Lost........

You need a backing board that is 16x20. Now cut 4 strips of board that are the exact thickness of the board that the photos were mounted on. 2 strips 15" x 2 7/8" and 2 strips 16" x 2 3/8". Center the photo on the backing board. Glue the 4 strips around the mounted photo. Now cut the mat to cover at least 1/4" of the photo on all 4 sides. Glue the mat to the strips surrounding the mounted photo.

Second that motion. I've mounted Endura with PS before and orange peel resulted. Haven't gotten the Permalon to go with my Kool Tack yet but, from what I've read, its a very important part of the equation in avoiding orange peel. I can say from experience that Kool Tack is wonderful stuff and priced right.
