A customer of mine is asking me about this.

She has a photo inside of a pocket watch. The image is transferring onto the back of the watch and she's looking for an acid free plastic material that she can buy (probably from a craft store, etc) that should could cut to size that would protect the photo in particular.

Any ideas of where I can send her? We've got tons of craft stores, but I don't know what to recommend with any confidence that it's acid free. Ideas?

Acid free? That's not good enough, since acetate and some other clear plastics could offgas other chemical nasties.

She needs a patch of Mylar-D or Melnex 516, both of which are not only acid free, but free of everything else that could do harm in there, too. If you don't have any, a nearby framing friend probably does. Heck, if you have time, give me your address and I'll send you enough little scraps in an envelope to do about 10 of those watches.

I'll take you up on that! Thanks!

I've not performed mylar encapsulation in framing before as most pieces we handle are in relatively good condition. Is mylar encapsulation mostly for particularly fragile paper?

If this picture is one-of-a-kind, scan it before you remount it in the watch case.
