Has anyone used Peterboro matboard in the last little while? I came across it about a
dozen or so years ago and was NOT impressed. I understand they now have an archival
line and wondered if anyone out there has used it and if so what they thought of it.

Can't seem to find a website for them either.

I use it all the time, Jan. Peterboro boards are a Canadian board. They do have an archival line called "Accent". The colours are a little limited, but they recently came out with some faux textures that are not too bad and work well in some jobs where money may be an issue. I wouldn't place them up with the same quality as Bainbridge or Crescent (just cutting them will tell you that), but there is a definite price difference and like I said, for certain jobs they do great. I replaced all my paper mat options with their Accent line a few years ago.

I get my supply through Framecraft Ltd. in St. Catherines Ontario, but I believe that Larson Juhl in Canada can provide them for you. You can pick up a complete set of thier samples for about $25.00.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ted,

We use Crescent exclusively in our shop and I was told Peterboro Accent Was about the same quality as Crescent White Core. How do you find it compares with regard to colour consistency and flaws? The last time I used Peterboro {which granted was a long time ago} my main beef was the flaws. Hard to work around sometimes.

Nice to talk to a fellow Canadian :D

Hi Jan,

Welcome to the Grumble. It is nice to talk to a fellow Canadian. There are a few of us here and people from all over the world in fact.

The boys from Peterboro will tell that the archival quality of their Accent mats will match any on the market. I'm not sure that I would buy that, but the overall quality of the board has improved over the last few years...in my opinion, anyway. I have not had any problems with flaws or colour consistancy. I'm a Watercolourist, myself, as well, and I've had paintings framed with the board now for many years. The white core is consistant and the artwork has not suffered in the least. I don't know if I'll be able to say that 50 years from now, but, then again, I'll be dead by then.

Like I said before, I use it as a paper mat option and I do like their new faux finishes (rather cool). The price makes them attractive and the samples are cheap! I also like to support Canadian manufacturers when I can. The only problem is when you cut them. There is a definite difference in smoothness. Make sure that you use a new, sharp blade and all will be OK.

Hope this helps.

You guys still having winter?
;)

Hi Ted

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the Accent would work well for us , and as you say, it's a plus to buy Canadian when you can.

Would you believe we haven't had any snow on the ground for at least two weeks. The grass was even looking like it was thinking about greening up. But of course, now that it's the first day of spring we're due for 10cm overnight. That's our wishy washy maritime weather for you. I won't trust that winter is really over until April is gone.

Thanks again
Jan

Is the quality of the "Accent" range for real?
At only half the price of the others it makes it a consideration. It is interesting to see comments comparing it to a white-core board, I can only say PHEEEWWWW when I think of the effort and energy expelled by the guy trying to sell me this stuff the other day! It was also claimed that it is the premier board used by museums etc as it is of much "better" quality than the others.

Lance,

Like I said earlier, I use Peterboro mats and I am satisfied with the results they porvide, however, I would probably not go as far as to say that they are superior to other well known products on the market. For most "regular" framing jobs (if there is such a thing), I have had great results with the board. Their colours are limited...but what a great price. For me the best rule of thumb is to use them for any non conservation framing, however, the quality of the board has increased over the years. I believe that they have new owners now, so who knows.

Steve, nice to hear from another Canadian. Will you be in Toronto on October 26-27?

Ted

Ted: just registered, should be able to make it; if organized enough (probably not) we would exhibit (native art, Morrisseaus, etc). Hoped to go to Atlanta but not looking too good, last time I went to Atlanta I ended up meeting a girl that I'm now married to! Haven't been to a show since!

Peterboro board seems to be creating quite a stir in NZ. I am with Lance, it seems that there is no technical data relating to the quality of the core, the lignin content, facing papers etc... If there is any one out there who can show me some technical data on the manufacture of the board I would be eternally grateful. mattparrett@hotmail.com

We have been selling Peterboro regular and Accent board as a distributor for 6 years or so.
I would not rate the quality of the product based on price. Most of the alternatives, Crescent, Bainbridge, etc. have higher prices due to the large marketing costs.

Their "Accent" product has an alpha cellulose core, Conservation quality, the same as Bainbridge Aplphamat. Yes, their colour range is limited, however, if you apply the 80-20 rule, your volume is in Blacks and Whites. I would suggest purchasing from a Peterboro distributor. Example: Our list price is $8.00 CDN (approx 5.00 USD) compared that with a list price of $17.21 (10.78 USD) for the Bainbridge equivelant.

I am satisfied with information sent to me regarding this product, IMHO it is of satisfactory quality.

R Allen,
If I apply the 80/20 myth I sure don't get blacks and whites, though I imagine your market research shows otherwise...

It is a tad disconcerting seeing any good product piggybacking the marketing and merchandising of others though, I sure know how it feels when others do it to me.

The reason I mentioned that marketing is a major part of the costs, I assumed you were questioning the quality based on the price you were offered. I apologize if my assumtions were not correct.

BTW, we also distribute Savage, Rising and Crescent so I hope I don't seem to be showing any preferential treatment to one product.
