Technology is wonderful but...
Today it is very difficult to tell what type of photo paper you are dealing with. I recently came across an issue with perfectmount's release paper removing some color from a photo. not to any noticable level of the photo but you could see it and feel it on the release paper. I used to think this was a safe mounting product but if anyone has a better one I would love to hear about it.

I recently used 3m's Positonable Mounting Adhesive 568 to mount glossy-paper ink jet photos.

Got it from UMS. (figured I'd give our sponsor a plug)

I was very happy with the results.

Grumbling Mike,

Check out my previous horror story here.

I still think that Perfect Mount is as good as any product for this purpose, but it is clear that there are digital media that are pressure senstive as well as many that are heat-sensitive.

Latest numbers I've seen in one of my photo trade publicatons indicate about 25 million digital cameras were purchased during the 12 months ending June 2003. Have no idea if that is correct, but out photo processing business is down, with many good customers experimenting with digital.

Consumer-level photographers printing on inkjets frequently make the mistake of buying whatever "photo" paper they can find on sale. They don't understand the need to profile to get a good print. And, more importantly for framers, they don't realize that inks and papers have to be compatible. If they are not compatible, some inks will never completely dry and will smear or lift off the paper.

We have tested various ink/paper combinations and found some that never dried to the touch. Some others appeared dry to the touch, but smeared or released under pressure.

After using 3M's PMA for six years, I have yet to notice any problems. It seems to work great for a wide range of materials.

Has anyone come across a situation were PMA failed to work well?

Eric, I think Perfect Mount and PMA are essentially interchangeable in terms of the adhesive. I happen to like Crescent's SuperSmooth board, which is available from limited sources with PerfectMount pre-applied.

The problem here is not the adhesive, but the digital medium that seems to tolerate no pressure. Pressure-sensitive adhesives without pressure are doomed to fail.
