I am fairly new in the framing arena. Realized that depending on the mould profile, the bottom front edge may not join properly- always a little gap- tried to calibrate my morso f which has new blades - I would be thankful for any advice or related experience. I only use scandinavian pine. Cheers!

Welcome to the Grumble, Brown eye.

Sometimes you can get a gap on the outside corner of your frame when you place your V-nails too close to the edge of the miter. If you do this, the thickness of the V-nail forces the fibers of the wood apart and makes the joint look like it isn't cut correctly. The gap is usually about the same height as the size of the V-nail, 10mm high gap formed by a 10mm nail.

A suggestion, try placing your V-nails starting about 1/2" inward from the point of the corner and see if you still get a gap. Chances are you will find a nice tight joint and no gap at all.

Good luck.

Perfect Joints ... ahem!

Ah yes, here are directions for a perfect joint! ;)

Apologies ... didn't mean to digress!!!

Anyhoo ... Welcome to TG.

What are you using to join your frames?

Have you tried using a miter sander after cutting ... as an easy way to verify accuracy of your chopper.

If you followed Andrew’s suggestion, wouldn’t that be “Norwegian Wood”?

Sorry, I, too, digress.

Welcome to the Grumble, Brown Eye.

Lousy miters and joins have been the subject of endless discussions in the past. You might try clicking on the “Search” button at the top of this page and you should be able to pull up more suggestions than you probably need.

I can almost always get a perfect corner but I can't tell you how. It's starts with how you chop and ends with the placement of nails and fence adjustments. How you hold the moulding while chopping and joining also come into play.

Now for my comments on the topic name and your name.

CA I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I figured with this being a framers forum there would be one or 2 off color remarks regarding the "perfect joint".

Brown eye may be an unfortunate choice of screne name, or maybe I just watch to many shows with low comedic value but the term Brown Eye has a fairly illicit conotation.

Andrew... is that one ounce or two??

Had a dog named Brown eye once. Whenever he walked past people, they would all look at him as he walked away and say, "Yep, there goes ol' Brown Eye"!!

How's that, Brian??

wow - that's a comical dog's name.
glad he never got lost...

"Has anyone seen my brown eye? ...it's about this big with long hair."

I personally am shocked and completely surprised that a fellow Californian would make a reference to using hard narcotics on such a conservative forum as The Grumble.

Don't you know that we are in the middle of one of this countries biggest wars to save all humanity, the war on drugs? The American people would never have allowed so much money to be spent, into the billions, if they did not take this war seriously. How many families have been destroyed because a family member was thrown in prison for smoking dope? Do you honestly think, 'we the people' would have allowed this to happen if we did not believe in the war on drugs?

I guess what is really amazing is that it was a Californian who made this reference, us being such an uptight state and all.

About twenty years ago, when the war on drugs was in it's infancy, The California Police Officers Association conducted a study that proves beyond the slightest doubt, that smoking dope will make you want to rape, rob people, kill police officers, and be less than a good citizen.

I am just disappointed that this has happened here on The Grumble.

Actually, I don't drink alcohol, nor do I smoke tobacco, or locoweed, don't shoot up, don't snort. I'm like a Mormon, except not as nice, and I drink coffee, and I don't go to meetings.

thanks for tips on perfect joints

Thanks for the tips and the jokes. I will calibrate even more etc. I think I need a mitre sander after all actually. Did not expect my name can be so exciting. Cheers!;)

Sander?

Hi BE

I've never had a problem getting a perfect join with my morso. Are you sure the angle brackets on top at the front are set at the correct position?

Do they dry fit together?

Or is the problem just when you join with the underpinner?
