PBS World's Independent Lens is airing a documentary, The Desert of Forbidden Art, the story of how a man of great vision and courage, I.V. Savitsky, spent years collecting works of art that was banned under Stalin's Soviet rule.

Here's the event page on FB: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=151860741543277

The humble Uzbekistan museum that was the fruit of Savitsky's labors contains nearly 40,000 works from a variety of Soviet-era avant-garde artists. Here's a link to the museum's web site: Karakalpak Museum of Arts.

I was totally stunned by the quality of the work represented. The world owes Savitsky a great debt of gratitude.

One of the best hours I have spent recently.
