Hays, Kansas,
Question; I am attaching an embroidered patch to foamboard, and don't have an attach EZ, so what is the best way to attach? I'd like it to be flat with no wrinkles, should I use glue, stiching, or ??? It is not valuable. Randy J.

Unless it is your own personal patch, I would not use glue of any kind. Although I do have an Attach EZ kit, I still sew the majority of patches we mount. I would sew around the edges of the patch with a matching thread color, and add more stitches to the inside of the patch as needed to get it as flat as you want.

Why are you mounting it to foamboard with no matboard?

Same as PaulSF said - if your not concerned about conservation and if it isn't valuable glue it - another option and it works great is double sided carpet tape. The carpet tape is super strong and the patch lays flat and will never let loose - learned that from an old timer that did a lot a framed patches for Police Departments, Fire Departments, motor cycle clubs, etc. Works great but I would really be concerned if it were a conservation issue.

This is a subject that I have been battling for years here on the G. Almost all of the educators are in agreement on this subject and will tell you to never...ever...glue anything. What seems to be not valuable today could become so in the furture, or the customer might one day want to re-do it. In my humble opinion, nothing should ever be attached in a way that would not be reversible if needed. I'd say sew, sew, sew.

I sew the patches to 1 or 2-ply board cut to hide behind the patch and then glue to whole thing to the mat. It's going to stay put and the patch itself is still removable and it's so much easier on my hands.

On patches when conservation quality is not an issue, I cut double sided fusable web (similar to the type used to fix hems) to the size of the patch and then iron it onto the matboard.... I've never had one peel up.

Jan, Never thought of that - I may have to buy a iron because I think you are spot on. It would be a heck of a lot easier than the carpet tape that I use.
