For many years I have wondered what kind of tape the old framers used on passepartout. I mean, it had to be a water solulable tape, right? They didn't have self-adhesive stuff back then - and that tape STUCK!!! For a century or more, in a lot of cases!

I have tried black linen tape, which usually peels off and won't stick to itself, and other than using a vinyl tape (ugh) I couldn't think of any way to create a black (or colored) tape.

I tried painting linen tapes (both water soluble and self-adhesive) and the water in the paint made the adhesive worthless.

I have tried gold and silver mylar tapes and they don't stick very great either. Plus they are quite unforgiving (lumps, wrinkles, etc.).

TODAY I MADE A BREAKTHROUGH!!!

I used black gesso to paint the grey Lineco frame-sealing tape, and due to the metal layer between the adhesive and the paper - IT WORKED!!!

The adhesive was still active, and the gesso created a nice matte black look to my project. I made a black gator foam shadowbox for my "Night Mare" Art Horse project and used the black Lineco to tape the edges of a piece of plexi to the front.

Perfect!

Ya just never can tell when yer gonna need a piece of specially colored tape - and archival couldn't hurt! I am asuming that acrylic paint would also work.

Just thought I'd pass this along to y'all.
