What kind of tape can I use that will stick both to glass and to matboard in the old passe-partout style? I am repairing a small domed novelty item - black tape needed - checked in the Paul Fredericks books and he mentioned that the tape that was used years ago was gummed paper tape but now plastic self-adhesive tape is being used which won't stick nearly as well or as long as the gummed paper tape.

If all else fails I will make my own gummed paper tape from black paper and use gel medium.....

Problem is this is a 5" circle - I need something stretchy - I wish I could just climb into my WayBack Machine and buy some real black gummed paper tape!!! I already have a small stash of antique passe-partout rings so I am all set in the hanger department!

Anyone have any ideas???

Mar, you could use flexible charting tape available from any larger art supply store that still carries Letraset or Chartpak. It's available in a number of colors, including black, and is intended for doing charts for graphic presentation.

It's a paper tape with a slight crepe finish and is flexible. I think it's available up to about 1/4" width, maybe wider and has an adhesive on one side only, but you could then apply an adhesive to the other side.

Hope this helps.

I got some black gaffers tape from specialty tapes (?) at one of the shows. I sticks like mad and has a nice dark finish.

I think Filmoplast makes a black linen tape too.
 Rick

P.S. Have you been reading "howtomakeapictureframe.com" ?

I did it! It worked!!!

Happy happy, joy joy!

I took a piece of Lineco paper and painted a circle onto one side with artist black gesso. Then I took my little Keeton circle cutter and cut out a circle about 3/8ths of an inch larger than the backing. Then I cut out the inside so I ended up with a black paper ring about 1 inch wide.

First I glued this paper circle onto the backing of the passe-partout, then, leaving about 1/8" solid from the board edge, I cut a whole bunch of little cuts, 1/8th inch wide, all around the whole circle. (Like Baer showed us in his class!)

Then I glued it onto the glass - glue used was Liquid Hide Glue, BTW - worked like a charm!

Whilst the glue was drying I burnished it down with a bone and then trimmed it evenly around to show 1/8th inch of black border.

Absolutely perfect (and this would have been a whole lot easier on a straight piece of glass instead of a convex circle!!!)

Thanks, Hugh!

And never trust Filmoplast black linen tape - it ain't real big on sticking to glass (don't ask!).

Congrats, Mar!

The sign of a true designer ...come up with a design and then go figure out how the heck you can do it!

Gotta love it!

You asked for them, Val!

here is what the convex piece looked like before I trimmed and burnished the "tape."

And here is what it looks like trimmed.

Giving me a great appreciation for anyone who photographs convex glass!!!

So that's what you were up to!! I couldn't visualize.....good job, Mar. I love the kitty!
