What's the best way to frame papyrus? Some one made the suggestion that the papyrus should be dry mounted before it is framed. Is this true? How exactly do you dry mount papyrus? The papyrus has waves & is curled on the ends. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you are going to dry-mount a papyrus, I would suggest that you use Fusion. Because it liquifies, it will fill in the spaces, helping to allow the papyrus to lay flat.

Cut the Fusion a little smaller than the size of the papyrus so that it won't melt out away from the edges. I personally like the edges to be a little loose. It keeps the natural look. If any of the Fusion does leak out during the d-mount process, carefully trim off with an x-acto blade while it is still warm from the press.
If the papyrus looks a little wrinkled when it comes out of the press, you can put it back in for a few minutes. The wrinkles will come out.

I don't try to mount papyrus flat. I usually float mount with hinges--often on black or gold (strategically placed at the thicker areas so they don't show through, use spacers or matting. Overmatting can look great too -- Those waves are part of the charm!

I love framing papyrus, the stuff looks hidious but I like framing it! Float it with reverse bevelled matboard as a spacer, this paper should never be flat it just don't look right.
Be aware that sometimes you will get the Banana paper that will turn black if heated, it seems to take about 12 months before it shows.
The papyrus king!!!

i have plenty of past experience with papyrus. i also find the bends and wrinkles part of the charm of the art. there are different grades of papyrus. i have never mounted but floated and hinged this work. i always seem to work with black, gold and a rich cinnamon color.
it is very impressive to see the finished product with a float to show the lifts in the paper. my clients are always so pleased. i would think pressing flat would take away from the " original work look" that it has.
please email me for anymore help
