How are you going to treat it as? Or how does your customer wish to treat it? Archival? Tourist art? A mixture/balance of both?
Do you have any design preferences already on the table?
(such as the glass sandwich?)
or
(floating on board or fabric)
or
(matting, or any ilk)
With each style come different solutions, or in some cases, lack thereof.
I just got one in that's 72 x 34. I was planning to use hinges with wheat starch paste. Haven't done it yet, but it should work, I'll just be using a few more than normal because of the size.
This papyrus has been rolled up for some time and is rather wavy. I would not want to try to mount it flat, I think that would create creases where the heavier waves were.
Hi,we are thinking sandwich between masonite and plexi. Customer origially wanted to mat but size and costs got in the way.
The papyrus is quite wavy so mounting may be chancey. Thinking hinge to masonite and face with plex?
Thanks Paul Snider.
Do NOT mount it directly to masonite, which is highly acidic. Even a low-end matboard would be better. Besides, the value of the time and effort required to make pass-through slots in it would far more than outstrip the cost of a proper matboard substrate. In any case, hinges should work fine. Just use enough of them for the size, and locate them behind thicker, more opaque elements of the papayrus so they don't show. Rick
Paul,
I would float over AF reverse bevel cut 3/16" foam center board - even if you have to piece it. The board may be fused together with 2" wide strips of Mylar and 3M jet melt hot glue which Hugh has tested and is neutral.
Hinger over the top edges and reinforce to back of pedestal. Loosely add side sand bottom hinges and allow piece to hang naturally. It can be flattened lightly using a hand iron or counter rolled if the paint is not not fragile. Or you can humidify in a make-shift double can humidifier.
Then the platform can be mounted with heavy PVA adhesive, Titebond, ot the same hot glue to the backing.
