I had an art show at my shop yesterday, Saturday, and while I was taking a break behind the design counter, I was approached by a visitor who works at one of the paper mills this area, Western Massachusetts. He started pulling mat samples and said he likes to see the product he makes at the consumer level. Then we got talking about the recent paper mill news. It was recently announced that Rising Mill in Housatonic, MA, a division of Fox River Paper, in Great Barrington, MA will be closing. The plant was a 'specialty paper' division. You might know of Rising Mats and I'm also told that they sold paper to Bainbridge. Not in the printed news but news, Crane Paper Company, who as you might know makes our currency paper, will no longer be selling Rag paper to Crescent. You can see their water mark on the back of the rag mats.

Not exactly sure what implications there will be but I thought I'd pass it on.

(I'm continuing to read the news to make sure I'm passing on the correct information)

It's been one hour and nobody has responded to my post. Well, I never.... Pfssssst to you all!!! Now I'm going to have a big temper tantrum. Jerk!

(Just kidding of course)

Actually, I do find that news interesting, and wonder what changes there will be in the products we use every day. Hopefully not discontinuations of my favorite colors and textures.
I'm sure they'll find substitutes to maintain archival qualities, but I wonder how they might affect cutting ease and quality, etc.
Keep us posted if you hear any more.

Well Gal, now I am really ignoring your post....;)

I guess I shouldn't have given you that advice about which wines to get for that event.
I have a feeling you overindulged with the leftovers......

It just goes to show you how small our industry really is. If a second supplier can be found for the raw materials for Bainbridge, Crescent, etc. or will the products no longer be available.

Well, between reading this thread and Rob Markoff's - if there will be no more matboard and consumers will buy only digital screens to view their "artwork" - we might as well all call it kwits and retire.......

Rising is a great company, but this would explain why it has been so hard to get samples from them. They are used pretty heavily in the museum. The few that I know of had Crescent as the second supplier, so will they be first? Or are there a bunch out there already using Bainbridge?

Rising mats

I have driven many times to Small Company to pick up 200 - 300 rising mats at a pop. Usually we stop there on our way to visit relatives in CT. or on the way home. Is the closing going to effect Small Company too? I always thought they made their own mats. They must be supplied by Fox River?

Rising to close

I hope this link opens the right press release, so you can read the " official" version about the Rising mill closure.
As a mat board mfg I expect that the qualities made by Rising will be easily switched to another mill and that framers should not notice any great changes in the quality of the Museum mat board which may well continue under the "Rising" brand name. But knowing you framers so well - we will no doubt be reading on TG about any slight changes you find!
Whilst mills may claim we "constantly" check our quality - the truth of the matter is you the framer are the real checkers as you look at every sheet before you cut a window.

Sorry got the smiley in the wrong place and can't figure out how to move it!
Dont want anyone at Rising to think I'm "smiling" because they are closing!!
Meant to put the smiley at end of "framers will tell us if any changes in quality"!
