I am framing an oil painting on a thin wood panel .The customer wants me to use a float frame to match her other float-framed paintings on canvas. I have to build up about 3/4" to the front of the float frame. Is there a recommended way to do this? Normally I use foamcore strips but am nervous in this instance of how to attach to painting, which is of moderate value...

Try attaching (glue?) a small wooden stretcher to the back, slightly offset from the edge. Screw into that to hold package to frame.

I have glued stretcher bar to the back a few times too.

Only thing is... you said the painting has real value. This could alter (read: reduce) that value, and the customer needs to be aware of that. I would definitely get their permission and understanding before doing this.

Another option would be to use the strainer bar, but instead of gluing it to the panel, use hook and loop fasteners. Glue and staple one part to the strainer bars, then the mating strips to the panel.

Yes, you are changing it from its original condition, but some short strips of the material added to the back would be fairly minimal, and using scrylic gel medium as the adhesive provides a chemically stable option. Later removal from the frame would be much easier than if the strainer bars were glued to the panel.

I'd perimeter hinge it & use that to wrap around the srainer. Is it vey large?

Gluing strips of wood to the back will not alter value of the painting. And I would use hide glue for that.
