Maybe this is okay, but I feel like I'm overlooking something here.

The customer insists on putting 3 pastels on sandpaper into ONE frame, the size will be about 26 high by 87 wide. He wants the AR type of glass, so at that size I am looking at the new plexi stuff from TruVue. With plexi, I can not do a float mount, and must cut a 3 opening window mat. That's fine, but because I will be lifting the mat off of the art for pastel dust (and more distance from the plexi) splicing the mat may show due to lack of pressure in spots.

Okay, what I am thinking is to get a 48 x 96 board in white and cut it. Then paint it the color that I like.

What are the do's and don'ts of painting the entire surface of a (big) mat?

I am not looking forward to getting an even coat.

Just say no!

Putting plexi on a pastel would be a nightmare.

NOt the new plexi...with the coating it is anti static. The coating acts as a barrier if you wil and it makes the plexi static free...this is what I have read, if you use it let us know if it is true

I have painted mats in the past with success. But you have to paint BOTH sides to equalize the pressure! And use a roller or an airbrush - although, depending on the kind of paint you use, a roller gives a little forgiving "texture."

The new Optium acrylic from T.V. only comes in 48x71 maximum size sheets. So the point is moot.

It might be easier to cover the mat with fabric than to paint it.

Glazing sounds like a nightmare, though.

How about three separate frames hung really close together? Or maybe you could frame each piece individually, then surround them with one big frame?

Has you customer thought about how he is going to transport a 7' long frame?

Just some random thoughts. Good luck.

Brian, I just read that last night and figured that someone would catch this point before I got back in here. You have a way of breaking bad news to someone. ;)

I LOVE the 3 frames surrounded by a larger one, I luv ya Kit!

I think that he will like it too. Plus I can use A/R and save the $$$ of the Optimum. The pastel will be happier.
