Does anyone know if there's a place that will do oval framing in the Boston Area? I have a very old hand colored photograph of my husband's great grandmother taken somewhere in 1896 and it needs to be in an oval frame.
Any help is appreciated.

Jeanne,

I doubt there is anyone in the Boston area who could frame an oval picture. You may need to bring it to Appleton, Wisconsin, where there at least two of us qualified to frame ovals.

Actually, there are probably any number of framers in your area that could help you. It would be nice if one or two would step forward here. Maybe they're shy and will email you directly. Just make sure that whoever frames it has the sense and the means to keep it away from the glass. Your picture may be an unusual size, though there are companies that make reproduction frames in sizes that were once common, like 14x20, and now are not. It's also possible that your picture is convex, in which case you'll need "bubble glass" and a frame that can accomodate it.

Come on, Boston Grumblers, I can't do EVERYTHING for you!

Welcome to The Grumble, Jeanne. People come here for all sorts of reasons, but I'd have to say yours is one of the more interesting.

I can't help with your framing question, Jeanne, but I can join Ron in welcoming you to the Grumble. Glad to have you!

As Ron said, I'm sure somebody will be able to help you.

jeanne,
just about any framer in your area could do it, but I'd look for a PPFA sticker in the window, most fly-by-night framers don't join. If your picture IS an odd size, matting could make it fit into a standard size oval and also give you needed separation from the glass.
I still love my Earth Shoes!

Is that comment a new recruiting ploy for the ppfa or just a mistaken comment aimed at the picture framing community as a whole. If you have a ppfa sticker in your window does that make you a fly by day picture framer. Some very good picture framers choose not to belong to this organization for various or personal reasons. So I suggest Jeanne ask more questions and get recommendations for a frame shop that can do ovals regardless of what stickers they have in the window. As you can see the wording in that sentence did p-s me off. tdavis

Sorry about that, TD, I was just going by my expeience here in NYC. A lot of the "one hour" shops, don't join, and the afformentioned sticker is usually a sign of someone who's been at it for more than a day or so. No offense meant to you or other reputable framers.

Bogframe, I've been in business since 1976, I am not a member of PPFA, yet I do work for PPFA member shops. We make oval frames or we have our woodworker make them. Jay Goltz, another " Fly by night" framer, also is not a member.

Just because you pay a fee to PPFA, does not instantly make you the greatest picture framer in your town.

I have found that the PPFA is a great organization for beginning framers to join, they can learn a lot from PPFA. Based on that, a PPFA sticker can well be found on a shops window that has only been in the industry and in business for a month or two. Having just opened their doors makes them a great "fly by night" candidate, does it not?

Joining PPFA does increase their chances of surviving, but it ain't no guarantee.

I would suggest to Jeanne that she gets out the yellow pages and starts calling frame shops in her area. She can ask real questions like " How long have you been in business?" " Do you make, or can you provide, custom oval picture frames?"

Wow, how'd Jay get on the board and not be a member?

Since I run the Online Exchange, I have some insite to PPFA membership. Yes, Artists' Frame Service is a member.

And Jay is a PPFA Board member.

Jeanne-I don't know how far from Boston you are willing to go, but I am about 1 hour outside Boston and often work on oval frame projects. We stock some readymade oval frames but I also carry a line of custom oval frames that can be made to any size you need. If the drive is not daunting, call me to set up an appointment.

Thank you, Diane for getting us back on course!

Jeanne, if you're still out there, we really are one big happy family. And like all families, we have our spats. (Maybe we shouldn't be quite so public about it though.)

I stand corrected, some one had told me or I read on The Grumble that Jay was not a member. Boy, do I feel foolish.

John

As do I, and boy, is my face red under all this hair for stirring up this hornet's nest! My apologies to all I offended.
Jeanne- Make sure you ask your framer if he/she's using conservation techniques and acid-free materials in his/her framing, and if the job will be completely and easily reversable.
(Was that PC enough?)

Just wanted to let all you grumblers out there know that I e-mailed Jeanne privately and we have also spoken on the telephone. She is making the drive to our shop in a few weeks when our schedules coincide. I never expected to actually find a new client through the grumble, but I think it's a great benefit! I am especially thankful that Jeanne did not get put off by the fact that we tend to digress a bit on these threads...
