No matter who you are getting them from, you need to get those orders in now if they are shipping "Ground".

If you're just going down to the local art supply house and pulling whats left on the shelf this winter... more power to you. :icon9:

But if you have moved to a adhesive that is formulated for fabric mounting, the passes are starting to get snow.... and will soon be freezing. I've have called many of you, [that are my accounts] but time is running out.

Just a friendly word of advise.... figure that "Ground" is not an option again until April 15th or later (depending on the severity of winter).

Paul, chains were required on the pass betwen here and Sacramento just a couple days ago, and this morning I'm looking out my kitchen window at snow on the mountain tops....it happens early in these parts!

Baer, in all my forty three years in framing, I honestly do not believe I can recall a crises of such earth shaking magnitude. Frozen fabric glue....wow... I honestly am beside myself with concern. I know this horrendous catastrophic situation is aimed primarily at synthetic fabric glues, however, do you suppose Yes Paste is at risk as well?

Even as I consider all the ramifications of frozen glue, I am thinking, what can I do to prevent it right here in my own shop? I am considering purchasing an electric blanket to wrap around all the glues and liquids that might possibly freeze during the upcoming winter. I can only hope that the winter will not be so severe as to knock out our electrical generation plants, such as freezing the water that goes through the Hoover dam.

I know I speak for all of us when I thank you from the bottom of my heart for alerting us, and our industry, to this looming crises.

Baer,

Have you checked the temperature of an airliner's cargo compartment lately - we never turned on the heaters for Fabric Glue - only for pets.

This whole discussions sounds weird to me, because it's 93 degrees here today- in Cincinnati - in October.
 Rick

P.S. Because the consistency and working properties of these glues are crucial, I wouldn't laugh at this notion. Using previously frozen glue is about like eating previously frozen cottage cheese.

I don't remember, Mike, but I do remember liking the smell of that school paste. Later, I used to like the smell of mimeographed handouts (and the cool purple ink).
:icon11: Rick (easily amused)

It's not so crazy as it sounds. Most (if not all) water based polymer products such as, paints, glues, sealants, etc., carry warnings either on packaging, data sheets or instructions about the effects of allowing these products to freeze.

I don't know what it does to these things, but I guess the warnings ain't for nothing and delivery vehicles can get really cold on some routes in this time of year. It's probably good to be ready with enough stock, just in case. It'll get used later anyway!

I'm sorry if I sounded a bit cavalier about this issue, however, there are many reasons I live in San Diego, at the top of my reason list is that I never have to worry about my glue freezing. I remember years ago when I was being married, I would be going off to work and my wife would say, "just be glad you don't have to deal with glue that has been frozen, it's a good thing we live in Southern California." This of course would brighten my mood and I generally had a good day thereafter.

Conversely let's not forget to place our annual order for ATG tape during these frozen months (relative to the tropics) so they don't appear in July as one large glob of ATG booger.

Baer, point well taken.

JRB, obviously you are still the misogynistic nerdiwell your wife divorced on a daily basis, so you can take that surfboard you ride to work and shove it into the shelf it needs to reside in.... go fly yourself silly in your evil sunshine and mostly naked cancer riddle surf bunnies scattered liberalisticly about your ivory tower. And while I'm at it... may you get at least 1/2 of the rain, snow and Ice storm we will be getting starting next month.... oops, no... we got 1/2" of rain today.

Pat, How would you know? You are always flying at 37,000'... it's the little people who have to order things like glue (10lbs for a gallon) to go ground ($14) instead of Overnight at $64.

And there will be [as usual] those that danced in the sunshine, then found out that when they ran out in December.. there are 5 passes between Mississippi and California. And where do you think the trucks stop for the night... you guessed it: ON THE TOP OF THE PASS. That way it's all down hill in the snow or ice.

Freeze a class of milk.... then defrost and drink........... then you will get a good idea what happens to PVA....

Or better yet. freeze a bottle of Elmer's .... defrost and use.... carry on.

But seriously, some types of adhesives, generally water-based, do not respond well to freezing and thawing, and shipping in cold weather can be problematic. In fact, one product, Z-Gel I think, has a note beside it in some catalogs that it can't be shipped between certain dates.

It was close to 90 this weekend here in St. Louis, but as some pointed out, far colder in other areas. 90 in October??? That's just wrong.

Should this one be in warped? :)

Should this one be in warped? :)

The intent was a serious "heads up".... and a few who have paid that "Red Label" know that some of the ground will be stopping soon...

But hey, if some just want to :bdh: & :D . . . who am I to point sticks? Leave it be... you can move it next week end when the serious people have made note. But thanks for the offer Mike.

BTW: Speaking of the cold winter... are you and Andy coming to sunny Vegas this year?

If anyone gets stuck :help::D I am happy to send some from Oz that's if you don't mind it really runny after our long hot summers:thumbsup: Not too warm here at the moment though

Bit hard for me to comprehend your problem - it is water we need here  with the drought we are having :help:

The same warning goes out to those that use water-based finishes, such as Liberon's palette wood dye, or General Finishes' acrylics.

Yes - we look forward to WCAF and PPFA (the same week) What an amazing opportunity to hit two shows at once!!!

Mike

To borrow Hugh's byline ...

"The intelligent speak, the wise listen."

I appreciate the heads up, Baer. I'm down to about a quart and will order this afternoon.

Thanks.
