Hi All,

Just wondering if a US resident new to the country wanted to get work in a custom framing shop, how hard it would be and if one could earn enough money to cover living expenses or better? Is there more work on offer in some places than others or is there not much work on offer at all? Big country there must be some jobs around, are they casual by nature or full time?

Hi and Welcome to the Grumble,

You might be able to make a living but I don't know about the " or better" part.

In New york City you could probably pull in about $25.00 an hour if your good but living expenses will eat that up REALLY fast in the city.

Elsewhere on the east cost about 9 - 15 an hour is probably average.

These are just guesses based on my own work experience on the east coast.

Good luck with whatever you do.

You can find anything you want in the US if you look long enough. And you can earn all you want if you work long enough and smart enough.

I doubt anyone has hard numbers with which to answer your questions, but based on my limited experience I'll offer guesses if you will take them as such.

Most framers in the US are probably on the low side of the wage scale, including many shop owners. I believe most framing employees work part time rather than full time, and often work more than one job, either to make ends meet or to obtain medical insurance. Shop managers and owners generally work longer hours.

If I were a framer coming to the US for work without geographical preconceptions, I might choose a year-round resort community and play to the tourist traffic. Otherwise I might choose an older, wealthy community. Major metropolitan areas have some successful frame shops, but many neighborhoods do not support locally-owned businesses, including frame shops.
