The shop is closed Sunday & Monday so I closed Saturday as our day off for the New Year. How many of you will be closed this Saturday? I'm starting to regret my decision but it's too late now. I guess I should just enjoy the weekend and not keep thinking about what could be.

We are having a little party from4-6. Missoula has one of those alcohol free First Night events with things to do around town, like ice sculptures, short plays, music, art making. Lots of fun. So this year a friend of mine with a photo booth is setting up in the front window and we are making free prints for everyone. I hope we have a gazillion people in here. I've got some hot chocolate and treats for everyone. Then afterwards we are going out and about.

Have no regrets! They will find you next week. We're even closing Friday.

I've tried it both ways. When I work the whole week between Christmas & New Years I get a lot of cleaning and maintenance done, but I don't see any difference in sales figures whether I am open or not.

Every market is different, but here the time off is more valuable to the business than being open continuously through the holidays.

I suspect you could change your mind and be there on Sat and no one much would be the wiser.

Nope. We're technically closed between Christmas and
New Years, too, it's turning out we're mostly open this
week. I'm working Tues. and Friday, and my boss is
working five hours each day on Wed & Thurs. Saturday
will be off, which makes me happy since we have plans,
then back to the fray on Tuesday.

The great thing is, no matter what frustrations might
come along in this job, it's creative and varied. Plus,
it beats the heck out of being a Chinese coal miner.

Ha, I'll be open Saturday, (taking in Carla's unhappy customers.) I figure I'll be closed for a week for WCAF and probably will have some snow days in the coming months, so if there's framing to be done and customers out and about, I may as well work. On the flip-side, I totally understand Carla and I sure could use a day off! :icon21:

Most businesses that are closing for the holiday seem to be closing on Monday.

We're open normal hours on Saturday and Monday but are closing on Sunday. I have to get my direct mailing stuff done on Sunday so I'll do that from home and work on the books.

We will be open normal hours. And then open monday like normal. So just closed sunday like normal no special days off this season.

Closing in 2 hours and won't reopen till Tuesday. We are heading to Dollywood tomorrow for the last coaster rides of the year.

Closing sat - mon, I have been working every day since November except Thanksgiving I took off. The pleasures of owning your own business. I am sure someone will say they stopped by and we were closed. I would like to reply really so you have Saturday Sunday off every week paid holidays and you probably get a paid vacation too! But I will say I am glad you came back I appreciate your business. Happy New Year Everyone Hope it is a very busy and prosperus one

I will be closed this Saturday as I was closed last Saturday. Aside from New Years brunch at the old folks home, I will have THREE DAYS OFF IN A ROW!!!!!

Open this Saturday. Decided to close Monday. We were open the Monday the 26th and the few customers we had were all past clients that said if we were closed they would have come in another day.

We are closed Sat, Sun and Mon - due to the holiday.

I'll be here Saturday since I just reopened today and was closed Christmas eve.

Closed all week, watching movies, taking hikes, playing with the kids!

I took Sunday through Wednesday off this week; so only working 3 days; so yes, normal hours on Saturday. But, I am taking Monday off (usually I'm open) and have emailed my customers.

Had a nice order today though, but I knew she was coming in and would have come in next week otherwise.
Have some orders to take care of (the ones I didn't get to last week) and cleaning and bookkeeping. So will keep myself busy. Expecting some pick ups tomorrow.

It's okay. I'll take some time off when the weather is nice!

I've been working 7 days a week since spring. No sense in closing Saturday too. But I will probably call it a day around 4pm.

As for the BatesMotel, you could always just come to work for a few hours that day, as not everyone will know you had scheduled to close.

...remember, if people who normally work a lot have off (eg: NYE) then they're free to shop too. :)

Rats! Just scheduled a delivery for Monday morning that we'll have to get up at 7am for. hdskjdhfskdhagtwy <--- profanity

Same thing here Carla, except I'm not regretting the decision. Looking forward to another weekend off. Next Tues. will come soon enough and then it is back to the grind. Enjoy your time off.

I am looking forward to a long weekend off with my husband. We are planning a trip and "Going down to Cape May" to shack up with our cousins and eat at the Lobster House for dinner, YUM. I know I need the time and my girls were thrilled to bits I was planning to close. You know how it is goes you second guess your decision two minutes before it takes place. I need the time off and I'm relieved to hear I'm not the only one who plans on closing. I have one girl I left the option open if she wants to come in and make some cash she has a key, otherwise I guess they will have to come back on another day.

Good Luck, Good Health, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

We went to reduced hours this week but decided to be open anyway. Yesterday was actually fairly busy, today not so much. We plan to be open Saturday but close at 4 rather than 6. I figure it's a Saturday which is usually our biggest day. If others are going to be closed I want to take advantage :)

Normal hours resume next week.

Being fortunate to be very busy this holiday season, we've been open this whole week. We are closing an hour early on Saturday. Woohoo!

Have been closed since the 23rd, a "tradition" started in the days when I had to go out of town to the in-laws. Even some of our major suppliers have closed for a week. I've worked hard and I've earned a week where I do not have to worry about deadlines. Customers have been advised, orders have been made and I have popped in to do a couple of things but this is my time to be at home.

Customers who go to the big boxes because I'm not here would have gone anyway and looking at the current phone book, good luck for them finding a bunch of other local framers. As the years go on the numbers dwindle. But I'm still here, we had a decent year and I'm sitting in my jammies playing on the computer today!

Normal Sat (10-3), normal Sunday (closed), normal Monday ( 9-6). Not so normal framer, but that's nothing new.

Meh. Being closed on Sunday is painful enough. Now not only do we have to get up at 7am on Monday to deliver large and cumbersome jobs to a difficult customer, but another perpetually challenging customer just placed an order for a rush job they need left on their porch on Wednesday night for which we will receive the special order materials on Wedneday. And Wednesday was to be the only other day I take off in the month of January and that's for an all-day marketing boot-camp so just meh.

meh. meh. meh.

Well, that's whatcha get when yer Diamond Jim Brady.

Well, that's whatcha get when yer Diamond Jim Brady.

lol

I was going to say I'd prefer to be George Hearst but after seeing this on wikipedia:

Brady's enormous appetite was as legendary as his wealth. It was not unusual for Brady to eat enough food for ten people at a sitting. George Rector, owner of a favorite restaurant, described Brady as "the best 25 customers I ever had."[3] A typical Brady breakfast would be: eggs, pancakes, pork chops, cornbread, fried potatoes, hominy, muffins, and a beefsteak. For refreshment, a gallon of orange juice—or "golden nectar," as he called his favorite drink. Lunch might be two lobsters, deviled crabs, clams, oysters and beef, with a few pies for dessert. The usual evening meal began with an appetizer of two or three dozen oysters, six crabs, and a few servings of green turtle soup, followed by a main course of two whole ducks, six or seven lobsters, a sirloin steak, two servings of terrapin and a host of vegetables. For dessert, the gourmand enjoyed pastries and a two pound box of candy.

I have to admit Brady sounds more applicable.

Ylva, congrats on getting a big job. We had 2 small jobs come in, but did have several pickups who owed a balance so it's going to be worth opening today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

We are open till 3:00pm on Sat, mostly for pickups. Wanted to close for the week between Christmas and New Year, but the wife said - "what"? Good thing we opened - have been busy this week and have some unusual stuff coming thru; Alaskan artifacts, one of which requires an acrylic enclosure ala gravity groove style; two shadow boxes; one Whale baleen. Most people are off, so they have time to bring items to us for framing.

Tonight it is off to the Vegas strip for photographing the fireworks.

No rest for the wicked people of the Earth.

Peace & Love for the New Year

I'm glad I was open too. New artist customer... this time he wanted me to print his jpg on paper so he could paint over it, but it looks like I'll get a lot more work from him. Then the customer who'd been eyeing the Miro poster in the window finally decided to buy it.

Finally, I rescued a piece of art: lady came in with her daughter's drawing and wondered if we had a paper cutter; she wanted to give it as a gift and there was one ugly section where the daughter had messed up the perspective. She wanted to trim it off and went to the print shop next door, which was closed. I introduced her to the concept of "cropping" with the mat opening and not touching the original. She was thrilled with the result.

We had a fairly active day on the 31st. We finished our last Christmas order. It was an order where about a week before Christmas the artist pre-ordered materials for artwork that wasn't completed. At that time we told him that we were closing on Christmas Eve at 2pm. He said he showed up around 5pm on Christmas Eve and he was a bit irritated. If we were closed New Years Eve I think that would have been his final straw.

On Saturday a customer came in to pick up work that wasn't due yet. I saw a piece matted and the frame was joined so I thought I was giving myself a big non-hurried cushion by telling her to come back in 40 minutes. She said ok.

Then I was informed that she had brought in a second piece which was a deckled-edge piece to be float mounted. And after I realized this and right in the middle of the 40 minute window the artist shows up for his Christmas completion which was to be done while he waited.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Another artist who promised to come settle up his bill didn't.

Had to do a re-do for another artist where we just provide joined frames.

I'm about all artisted out for the year already.

Spent today doing some bookkeeping, charting goals for the new year, and working on a 2000 piece direct mailing.

Next week is super busy then we're hoping to settle into a more normal grind.

The week between Christmas and New Year's has always been extremely busy in my shop. It is Business As Usual for us, in fact Business As Better Than Usual. Any time working folks have vacation time is work time for us. This year was no exception! (yay!) That's Retail, sing along with me!

We will have plenty of days to lounge during those monster snow storms in January and February.
