OP3 - Which side goes up?

REBECCA
Everyone knows it is the smallest side up.

Rebecca, Shouldn't this be on "Warped"?
If your OP-3 is pitted and you didn't intentionally buy a non-glare variety, then I would say that it was stored somewhere that exposed it to a little too much heat or sunshine.
I had some of the OP-3A/R when it first came out that had been stored improperly and was able to get the "pitting" off by massaging the acrylic with isopropyl alcohol...not fun.
I would get up with my supplier, if I were you and see about getting a replacement piece that is pit free.
(If it is non-glare, the fuzzy side goes out)
BTW, how is the article on solvents going?

Rebecca, you had me worried. I've been using OP-3 for about a year and never noticed a front and a back (unlike Conservation glass, which has the softer, coated side toward the art.)

There is a dazzling array of technical information at the Cyro website at www.cyro.com but nothing about a front and a back to OP-3.

Thank you! It is the non glare variety. Sunny side up it is. Solvent article is done, but may not suit editor. I'm waiting to hear. If you want a xeroxed copy let me know!

Rebecca

By the way, if you get any scratches on the acrylic that you cannot easily remove, put that side facing away from the art. It's easier to convince the customer that THEY scratched it if it's not on the inside of the frame package.

Hmmm, now I'm confused. This is at my framers, and I just took a very brief look at one corner this morning. I think it's only got the coating on one side, but that's what I was expecting to see, so didn't give it a real close examination. I see at the site Ron posted that it's available with anti-glare on either one or both sides.

Assuming that the coating is on one side only, would that side go up (as Wally said) or down, down as with conservation glass?

Thanks for the tip re scratch side up! :D

Rebecca

If there is a front and a back to OP-3, I'm gonna have to recall half of my OP-3 projects to date. Some of them are boxes!

And I won't know WHICH half!

Where's Lois, anyway? All the wrong people are on The Grumble today (including me.)

Anybody wanna know about Wall Buddies?

Ok, I think I got it now - sorry Ron, I've muddied the waters and now will try to clear them.

The very finely pitted anti reflective surface on the OP3 plexi goes on the outside, as Wally said. UV coatings on glass go on the inside. Ron probably never got the anti reflective coating on his Plexi, hence he never saw a difference between sides, nor should he have.

The fault was in my question - I (foolishly and mistakenly)
thought the OP3 designation included anti reflection, which it does not.

Everyone can go back to work now, me too!

Rebecca

Cyro's anti-reflective designation is P-99. You can have P-99, OP-3 or both.

AR Acrylite is Abrasion (and chemical) resistant. If I could get delivery on AR OP-3, I'd probably use it on nearly everything I frame.

but then you do need to worry about which side is out. only one is treated to be A/R...learned this the hard way, how else.

Sounds like you have OP3-P99.
As you have now discovered, the fuzzy side faces out -- or you loose the "non-glare" properties.
One of the promoted advantages of extra UV filtering in acryclic is that it is part of the chemical mix in making the product and is throughout -- not a coating like we have with glass.
