Olympic Torch

How about cutting acrylic with a scroll saw into several flame shapes which could then be airbrushed with several transparent flame colors and layering them to look like they are emitting from the torch?

You might contact Vivian Kistler at Columba publishing she has done several.
She gave a PPFA chapter demostration on Framing an Olympic Torch.
she has a section on her web site called "Vivian Makes Mouse Calls" click on it & submit question she will respond to you.

As a Vancouverite I can’t help but find it funny the torch looks like a giant spliff. It really is true to Vancouver culture…

;) Rick
Actually, I did do a torch many years ago. Will try to post a photo on Monday. It's quite different looking than this year's model, however.

Made boxes for three torches....Two Atlanta and one Salt Lake. All three were done as displays that could be opened and the torch removed.

For the Atlanta torch, I sand blasted (etched) the flames in the glass that was in the door. Put a mirror behind the torch so the back could be seen. Design was similar to the Salt Lake box shown below.

You could etch the flames and then paint them with acrylic or oil paint.

We're just going to send all of our torches up to HB to frame..... He's the master of framing that kind of thing.

Thanks for the cudos Baer

Awesome torch, too bad Bombardier had their paws in making it.

I can't believe the gov & Quebec (the other coast) had to get involved in this West Coast event!

Enjoy the fad Bandsaw -0 wish I was there!

That's one gorgeous torch! It would be fun to get my hands on one and design a frame around it! Maybe a 2 sided glass thiingy with no visible frame around it. Maybe uber strong magnets under it so it just levitated in the air....

OMG Been talking to too many customers lately, their insane ideas are invading my grey matter! But that torch would be fun to frame up. Maybe it could be the next PPFA challenge?!

Torch customer looked at a hockey jersey frame sample in the shop and that's what he wanted. The runner had a lot of Olympic torch related stuff including a bright red Tee shirt with a map showing the torch route all across Canada on the front. The Tee shirt will be the background with the torch at an angle across it to one side. Then there will be the famous Olympic mitts (1 in 15 Canadians has these red mitts now), the winter Olympic touque, and an enlarged photo of the runner with the torch. Lots of red and white with black base mat and top mats. LJ brushed silver metalic frame on a 4" deep black box. Customer seems happy and excited with the design - I'm OK with it. At least I talked him out of putting in the plastic Coca Cola bottle that lights up when you push the little button.

At least some Canadians had fun with the torch - favourite picture was the surfer on his board carrying it out in the west coast surf.

No threaded hole in the bottom. They show a stainless steel stand in the literature but apparently they aren't available. The entire front comes off so we can use mylar strips and then put the front back on to cover them. Little lock button at the bottom pulls out to release the front.

I just looked at the web page with the progress map of the torch relay - they are zig-zagging all over the place! I guess they want to get it through every town bigger than a cross-roads. Weird.

I would like to see a photo of your project once it is completed - sounds cool, bandsaw.

Good to know. I'll probably be seeing at least one of the torches as the US Olympic Training center is just up the road in Colorado Springs and I do framing for several of the trainers/equipment managers.

Looking forward to the pictures when you're done!
