Is it possible to remount an old photo that is half falling off its mounting? It was drymounted on X board and has come loose on the edges but is stuck Real Good in the middle. I'm thinking spray mount and then weight it. I don't think I could tuck Color Mount or Fussion in and get a good stick. Or any ideas on how to remove it completely without damaging it? I'm open for any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Scan it and then frame the copy.

If you don't have a scanner or good quality printer you can take it to Kinkos or other office supply/copy center.

Sometimes it is best to follow the "Do ye first no harm" rule. That being said, If it's stable enough, you might float mount to embrace and enhance the age of the object. Otherwise, I'd look at scanning and reprinting, possibly using a service such as Digital Custom or the like. Sometimes these things mean a lot to the owners and the battle scars can bring back cherished memories.

A conservator may be able to remove the photo for you.

DUH! I send stuff to Digital all the time! Is this a "Can't see the forest through the trees" kind of moment? Thanks Grumblers, you're the best!

Before you do anything...

Before you do anything, I'd suggest getting a high quality scan made. Maybe your customer would like the idea of keeping the original as intact as possible and framing the copy. You could even offer to have it touched up (see "Photoshopped") if the original has issues like fading, rips, etc.

As a community, I think we (all?) want to do what's best for the art. Just because something comes to you poorly framed/mounted shouldn't give you license to schlock it up some more. If the customer has a price issue, I don't think there's anything wrong with offering what's right & turning the job away if need be. You'll keep your integrity & win customers over in the long run.

Don't mess with it. Pictures of old babies are exceedingly rare.

(Don't make me explain that.)

She's a really great customer that just lost her husband a couple of months ago. Liver cancer.

She brought in the photo of her daughter as a baby in an old frame. The frame is awesome, 3 mouldings stacked. All she really wanted was glass and clean the frame up alittle. The frame had $10.99 written on the back with the photographer's stamp. LOL!

I'll suggest the reproduction photo and perhaps she might want to give it to her daughter as a gift. Thanks guys.
