Hello fellow grumblers once again! I'm back with this pillow thing again. I am in the process of sewing it down onto the mat and am contemplating how to do the fringe. It is cotton and is unruly...luckily I keep a wide tooth comb around for items such as this. But I'm not sure how to go about mounting the fringe. Has anyone done any framing of items with fringe and how did you go about dealing with it? Also, what might be the best as far as preservation/conservation goes? This is the stuff that keeps me up at night :icon11: !

Hi Kat.
Show us a photo if you can and we'll have some ideas for you.

Generally I just let the fringe hang as it is.

Okey dokey...here's a pic. It's just simple cotton fringe like you see on an old rug. It runs all the way around though and will flop over at the top if I don't attach it somehow.

Thanx in advance for any tips!

well, in the past, I have just sewn down the knot part and let the rest do what it was meant to do. but I guess you could use Mylar strips across the fringe to keep it in place. I would also do a search for old threads, I am pretty sure its been discussed pretty recently.

For what it's worth, Vivian Kistler also recommends just letting the fringe hang, because it looks unnatural for it to be standing up on its own. She mentions it either in the Framing Needlework book or the Framing Collectibles one -- I forget which one since I was looking in both of them over the weekend for reference... and the books are still at home while I'm at the shop.

Is it mounted on fabric?
If it is, you could assemble the piece in its frame on a backwards leaning slant and that combined with the tooth of the backing MAY hold the fringe in place.
If not, I would look into a stabiltex or crepeline strap contraption thingamabob.
I would start with this to pick a good color:

For more info, do a search for stabiltex and crepeline here on TG.

Fyi,you will have to charge righteously for this fabric; it is expensive and there are ordering minimums.

If the fringe would hang down and block the view of the pillow, I might drape it behind the pillow...

If it is critical that the fringes stay put, you could tack them down with
the same paste used for hinging and a warm iron. After all, this is just
what is done when collars get starch in them. The only draw back would
be the possibility that the starch may darken slightly, over the years, but it
should do no harm.

Yes, Hugh, I was thinking along the same lines originally. Thank you for your input.

Maybe I'll play with it and see if it is completely necessary to attach the fringe. Figure if it was a pillow intended to be placed on a couch, the fringe at the top would sort of flop over anyway.

Back to the grind now!

Fringe attached! Thanks to Hugh's advice...I used a starch adhesive and ironed it down and it worked perfectly! I tried the "flop" method, but it covered too much writing at the top of the pillow, so I had to attach it.

I'll post pics when I finally finish it.

Thanx all for your input!
