Just got two silk Hermes scarves aprox 34 x 34 to frame. So, Less is thinking about slip mounting - or what ever you call it - into AF foam.

Linen 2-1/4" mat, museum glass and Studio 359-134 will be used. Final size is 38-1/2"x38-1/2". Less did not get enough for the job, but that is less. $650 each.

So, how do you mount these?

I think that a DCO is the current preferred method of attaching these. I am sure that Jim Miller and others will be here soon to either confirm or totally reject my suggestion. :p

Depending on the final design, I would probably try go go with a 3" margin instead of the 2-1/4, if it looked okay. Sometimes a slightly wider mat looks a little better. And the second reason, it is easier to cut.

With a 3" margin the outside dimensions would be 40 x 40, so the glass would be easier to cut from a 40 x 60. The 38-1/2 x 38-1/2 could also be cut from a 40 x 40, but I don't like cutting thin slices from Museum glass.

Of course a 1-1/2" wide cut is not much of a problem with Museum, but I had someone call about the price of Museum Glass 31-1/2 by 38 a few weeks ago; She measured from the front so I decided she really wanted 31-3/4 x 38-1/4, and I thought AAAGH, trying to cut 1/4 inch (or 1/8") off a sheet of 32 x 40 could be a problem, and I didn't have a 40 x 60 in stock, so I declined. The customer claimed it was NOT 32 x 39.

I did about 60 of these things about 10 years ago, and got quite proficient at it at the end. I used a sheet of batting beneath the scarf to make it smooth, and then sewed it to either alfa mat or a/f foam board with a sewing machine, stitching along the hem of the scarf with the longest stitch. A ball point needle is a necessity to prevent the silk from running.

I did these for the proprietor of an upscale ladies clothing store, and they sold like hotcakes.

Miss the good ole days.

Hugh had talked about a way to do this. I think it had to do with splitting open the fome core (or would it be matboard?) squeezing it inside like a long clothes pin. Can't remember how it was done, maybe my disjointed answer will jog someone else's memory and they can provide the info I am forgetting....

Can't finish the job because the TV Museum glass is no good.

Finally done today.
