I tried to update my Norton's Antivirus...boy did that cause some problems. It's not working. It says it doesn't have some components, that I should uninstall. When we try to uninstall, that doesn't work either. We haven't been able to make the patches and suggestions on their website work either. Has anybody else had this problem?

Flintstone, are you using Windows ME?

That sounds like ME.

If it's XP, your system restore might help - at least to get you back where you were before.

Have you tried their automated diagnostic tool at https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/activedata/asa_product_detection.jsp?ref=sup4

It's generally pretty good.

If that doesn't work, continue past this utility into the "Free Knowledgebase Support" area. Search for the specific version you have and quote the exact error message it gives. They'll give you a solution there to fix it, most likely.

While it's the most popular antivirus program, it has its share of quirks if you disturb it. Windows ME is especially troublesome with this product. You may end up manually uninstalling some of the pieces of the program, such as the program directory, registry, and liveupdate files. If that's necessary, the knowledgebase will give step by step info for how to do so.

Hope this is helpful

I don't know, Mike. Flintstone is unresponsive.

I think she might have been killed by a computer virus.

At first glimpse, I thought maybe Ed Norton had dumped Trixie for a younger girl.

Sorry, Flintstone. That was too goo to resist.

the norton update/upgrade has caused me many hours of problems with XP pro My network is still MIA. system restore was unavailable after too

I've had the same problem and did the un-install/re-install (my CD was handy). It worked without a hitch - just a bother because of the time involved including re-installing updates.

Has anyone heard of specific compatibility issues with the newest version of Norton Utilities and XP?

My anti virus and automatic update features have been working just fine, so far, but many of the Norton Utilities I was accustomed to using with 98 and ME just don't work at all with XP.

For example, the Norton defrag (Speed disk?) and resource monitors don't work at all.

Sorry...I was sleeping. Can't seem to get enough lately. It's must be a virus.

Anyway...I am running XP Professional. The uninstall never worked so I couldn't try re-installing. Now I am thinking it has something to do with the version I'm running. The software came with the computer. After two or three months they asked me to subscribe to live update, which I did. Perhaps they want me to buy a whole new program. I'll try that diagnotic tool first.

I've never tried the Norton's defrag tool. I'm using Diskeeper Lite. It works pretty well...accept for the intermittent pop-ups that ask you to buy the upgraded version.

Oh...and we did use the system restore, but it did not restore Norton's.

A friend who bought an XP computer with a limited version of Norton's had a similar problem with renewing his anti-virus subscription on line. He ended up buying a new package.

I use the MS defrag that comes with XP. I am becoming disenchanted with Norton Utilities and XP, as a team, but the Internet Security package seems to work well.

If you switched to McAfee, you might be in for as much a headache. None are trouble free, but McAfee has had significant user problems since releasing the current version which relies heavily on Active X and requires IE security settings to be downgraded to default or less.

Email virus scanning must be disabled entirely (in most cases) or the first email received with a virus will lockup your email application until someone can delete that particular message from the server.
