We recently downloaded updates for Norton antivirus on one of our computers and now the antivirus autoprotection keeps shutting itself off. When you try to go in and reenable it, it won't do it no matter how many times you click on it or which method you try to use. The only way to turn it back on is to restart the computer. It's getting to be annoying because it keeps popping up a message warning that the antivirus is turned off and generally getting in the way when you are working. Short of uninstalling Norton, is there anyway to fix this? I tried looking on the Norton site and couldn't find an answer.

My laptop was almost unuseable a few months ago until I uninstalled Norton, then it worked again.
I have a desktop that came with Macafee installed and for the first three hours it interrupted me every few seconds so I uninstalled it. Bought Nod32 and no more trouble!

To me N & M are both worse than a virus and I would never use either of them again.

It sounds like you may have another infection thats breaking Norton or a corrupted installation.

If you click on their website, the automated support tool is excellent and will almost always identify and solve the problem. (and its free)

I did go to the automated support tool but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I did find several articles online about similar issues other computer users have had after installing new updates. It sounds like it is a problem with the updates but I can't find a fix. I was hoping someone here would be able to help. I'm not sure I want to jetison Norton and reinstall it. I don't want to have to reinstall all the virus definitions. With my dialup, that would take hours!

Your auto shut off problem may be as simple as a corrupted Preferences file. Assuming that Windows has something similar to the Macintosh, with NAV off, find the NAV prefs file. On a Mac up to OS 9, it is in the System–> Preferences–> Norton Anti Virus Prefs folder.

When you drag it into and empty the Trash, the next time you launch NAV, the preferences file will recreate itself. You will need to reconfigure your preferences again, but it surely beats having to delete and reinstall the whole thing.
