Norton 360 = $19.00

I wouldn't use Norton if they paid me. I have used it in the past, but it became such bloatware that it was almost worse than the stuff it's protecting against. (not sure if that has changed, but I doubt it)

I use NOD32 now, and it doesn't really imact my system performance. McAfee and Norton make your computer run at 1/2 speed, or worse.

I had it...and used it for a while. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but I wound up uninstalling it because it was causing tons of conflicts -- and I was never able to connect my XP machines to Vista with it.

I still have two machines that I can't even install a print driver onto because of it (residue that would require hand plucking my registry....). (Evidently Norton hates HP's.)

I'm using Microsoft's Security Essentials now along with Window's built-in firewalls.

Thanks for the info, though!

By default, this program disables all drive sharing and printer sharing on your internal network.

You can change the settings to fix this, but it's not for the faint of heart :)

You know...even after sharing the device (using the IP address), it would work for that existing printer, but still wouldn't allow me to install new printers.... and the printer has to be installed to get an IP address.

Even closing my firewall to try and install it didn't fix it.....

grrrrrrrrr

(I'm in a happy place, I'm in a happy place....)

I absolutely frakking agree. Just think of it as the Nigerian version of protection for your computer.

Norton was TERRRRRRRRRIBLE from 2004-2009. They actually got it right in the 2010 version. It's no longer a super resource hog. I only tested the antivirus, and not the 360 or other internet security suites.

One of our new dells came with a 30 day trial and we used it, and I was surprised at the improvements.

Mike

well then I tried a 30 day trial of the new eset NOD32, which is great.

Then after that I put Kaspersky AV 2010 on, which is what we use on all our other pc's.

Kaspersky is great, but it does require 2 small setting changes made if you use LifeSaver. They're detailed in the LS tips thread.

I had read all of the negative reviews here on the Grumble regarding Norton and was leary of it. However, my son-in-law is the IT guy for one of our school systems here, and he is using 360 there as well on computers for his private customers and he claims not to have any issues with this version and no viruses getting through. So with reservations (from my friends here) I ordered it, since the SIL is the one that will have to deal with it, if there are any problems. :o

PS. The deal is over as it was I believe for 1 day only. So you won't be tempted, anyhow.

Well, if like Mike said its been improved that much...then maybe it is worth it now.

I bought a volume license before, so I was really upset.

And having a brother-in-law that's an IT...you're in a win-win situation no matter what! ;)
