What SHE said.... I wanna be buried with mine! L

I have a co-worker who wants to sell me his old Kindle Fire with a nice case for $100. It's 2 years old and pretty heavy. I'm thinking I will wait a while and buy something new with a warranty and a new battery. I don't need a tablet; I just want one. My iPod Touch does a great job of handling my emails and the web.. it's just small. I guess I will just lurk around and wait for a killer deal..

$100 for a used fire? A new one is $200.

My MIL really likes her fire. 1st gen. She has had issues with it holding or taking a charge. Some issues but a nice unit. If I get one it would be new and eith a warranty. We had to send hers back. It was a painless process and the turnaround was fast...

Saw the link. Good price on the hd+. Go for it. The problem I have with the kindle fire is amazon wants to become Apple. You have to buy thriugh Amazon. Get movies through Amazon. Get the nok... :)

You can get a full featured tablet that has all the bells and whistles (cameras, microphone, gps, bluetooth, microSD expansion slot, fortified glass, more memory, etc) for about $199 or $289, including case. (which includes the kindle reader app)

The 7 inch version of the Galaxy Tab 2 is $199, the 10.1" version is $289. My uncle picked one up 2 nights ago and loves it. Andy has had the older version for a couple years now.

Nook is in serious financial trouble and hoping to be bought out (I think Microsoft is looking at buying them out, probably to be re-tooled as a low end alternative manufacturer for their OS), Kindle Fire is decent but is almost as restrictive as Apple. (Kindle tries to force you to buy everything from them, and not the free market, has no expansion ability, etc) The book store android tablets also lack the horsepower of full featured ones, and often lack the newest version of Android.

ASUS is another great brand, too.

What Mike said.................

Both the Kindle and Nook use specialized (read mucked up) versions of the Android OS that they have modified (read again mucked up) for their own purposes. You are far better off with a regular (not mucked up) Android tablet.

I have a second gen Kindle that I never use any more. I have the first Samsung Galaxy 10.1 that is my main reader using the Kindle App. My Galaxy Note II, with it's 5.5" screen is also very readable with the Kindle app. I use to take my Tab along for Doctor's and other appointments where I knew I would have time to kill. Now my Note II serves very well as a reader.

I also have the Nook app, but I had the Kindle way before the Nook existed and since the Nook gives me no incentive to buy for the Nook, I don't use it.

I want the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet but at $399, I think it is $100 overpriced. The price is just starting to slowly come down. When it hits $299, I will be a buying it. Love the s-Pen on my Note II. The Note 8.0 also has the s-Pen.

Thanks for the advice. I have searched a bit and found the Galaxy Tab 2, 8 gig, for $179 + $1.99 shipping at newegg.

Tigerdirect has the ASUS 7" Memo pad with 16 gigs for $130 or $140 with a 16 gig micro card, plus shipping. Any thoughts on those little guys or advice on where else to shop?

Time for some showrooming. Head down to your local bestbuy and check them out. I know they have the Tab 2 at $169.99. I don't know about the Asus but your Staples or other office store may have them.

Thanks, Larry. Good advice. I will check them out.

yea make sure a 7" screen isnt too small for ya. It would be for me.

It is all a matter of personal preference.

Office Depot has the Samsung (4.0 Android, 8 gigs) for $170 and the Asus Memo Pad (4.1 Android, 16 gigs) for $130. Both have Micro card slots and both get good reviews. I will go and hold them tomorrow and see what I think. Both are in stock at my local store. (Says their website.) If the Asus feels good that looks like a terrific deal for a new toy. No rear camera, but that isn't important to me.

Thanks for the advice. I tried an old iPad that the coworker was selling and found the 10" screen unwieldy for me, Mike. The neighbor's cat and I like to check the emails and surf the web a bit while I enjoy my morning coffee on the front porch before I have to go to work. The cat doesn't care what I buy, she's just happy to get a scratch behind the ears and one around her tail.

I went with the Samsung at Office Depot. I just hate dealing with the nerds at Best Buy who try to up-sale you on every purchase. It got the best reviews and for $203 including tax, I got the tablet, a case and a 16 gig mini SD card tossed in for free. Now I have to learn to use it! I had no idea the card was included, but am happy about that. It's my father's day gift to myself.

That's a great deal! You'll love it, and a real bonus that it came with an extra 16gb expansion card. That will probably come in handy to store photos and music.

My uncle is coming over to the shop this morning with his new (10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab 2), for some lessons, and so I can install about 20 popular apps and widgets for him. Will also put teamviewer on, so i can get in to it to help him if he has any problems. (he's in 70s)

He has had it for a few days, and I think he has it mostly figured out. His gmail account is set up, he has installed several games, etc.
