i have some two-sided paper items i need to float mount. i'm wondering if there exist any conversation adhesives or tapes that are reversible that are NOT water or alcohol activated. liquid could damage the pieces i'm working with. so need strong enough to reliably hold the float (fortunately they're small paper items) but non-permanent so the items could be removed without damaging the backside if/when desired down the road. something like lineco's abaca self-adhesive hinging tape would not work as it would damage the paper back when removed. ditto for anything water activated.

does such a thing exist?

interesting. never heard of it. do you have experience using? how have you used?

I have it but have yet to use it. Many on here are more familiar with its characteristics, but I was answering the question of a non-water based reversible adhesive. Klucel-G is alcohol activated.
There are some here that use it exclusively because of the quick drying time and the ease of use though there does seem to be something of a learning curve vs. traditional rice or wheat starch pastes.
I know of nothing in the precoated realm that would satisfy your search.

understood, thanks.

i wondered if there might be some kind of glue dot type product. like Zots which are sold in the craft space and I don't believe prescribed for the target application (waiting to here back from them).

Wally is wise. Klucel-G all the way. If you use alcohol it solves your concerns about using water. The other advantage is you can use a pretty wide range of how much alcohol you use and still have it work. If you look up the subject in this forum, you will see I have used a 6 to 1 ratio of alcohol to powder whereas many use as little as a 1 to 1 ratio and still get good results. You just need to experiment a little to see what works for you.

Your best bet would be to encapsulate the items between two sheets of Mylar. There would be no adhesive of any kind touching the items, it allows you to view both sides, and it is completely and easily reversible. Encapsulating also gives the items more physical structure, allowing for safe handling. Mylar is inert, and will not deteriorate or damage the items.
