A note to all Grumblers far and wide. When I first logged on a few months back with questions, I had NO idea where this new venture would lead me. Since that time I've had loads of great e-mails from Grumblers who post, and some who don't, but all given encouragement & great suggestions. Have since framed/reframed everything I could get my hands on at the antique shop where I work. I have done a few jobs for outsiders, but nothing I could hurt or destroy! Have read every volume of Picture Framing books/magazines I could get my hands on. Found out I could only go to Larson/Jule school if I agreed to sell their frames/mats, etc.. Since then, I found a community college 25 miles away that taught picture framing 101, and am now signed up for the next class too. The teacher is a retired framer who loves what she does, and wants to share her knowledge with anyone who is interested. We've become quite good friends and I feel I've found a wonderful mentor. But I'm rambling. What I really wanted to post is this; There is nothing to fuel the soul like people challenging you to do something better than just half-***ed. Framing has become my #1 interest, and am even dropping other hobbies to pursue it. Anyway, three cheers to whomever started this board, and the regulars who keep it going. Oh ya, "Learning Member" makes me feel MUCH better than Newbie. More cheers for that change.

SuzyQ,
I was one of those hardliners who openly critiqued your questions. I apologize if I came accross too harshly. One thing I've learned in this industry is that the more experience I get, the less I know. This means being open to all kinds of ideas and opinions and be willing to change my habits.
I guess its called "being humble".
Anyway, you have shown a truly professional approach. Hang on that mentor as tight as you can because not every framer in your city will share their secrets. I also found it neccesary to commit to one supplier when I started my own business, because I was always phoning them asking technical questions. I now divide my business into 50%, 25% and 25%, and my loyalty has paid off in good discounts.

Good Luck!!

Way to go SuzyQ! You have accomplished exactly what I believe was intended in the first place: Get the knowledge. I, too, continue to learn and have a wonderful mentor I can reach when I have problems. I thank the Grumble (so appropriately named!) for keeping the fire lit under us 'learning members' and look forward to the further exchange of ideas.

Welcome into the fold, Suzy! From all your questions, I knew you had been bitten by the framing bug. I don't believe that framing is something you grow up wanting to do, I think it's something that we fall into by accident and then get hooked on. I also think it's a rebellion thing at heart! How many times did your parents tell you not to play with razor blades and glass? Well, now you make your living by doing exactly that! Anyway, keep asking questions...you'll never learn in a better way!
