What happened to the line that showed who was, or had been on the G recently? I miss it...

Me too. But...let's you know who has you blocked on IM. If they're on the G, but show off-line on IM, well, guess what...

That's not entirely true, my friend. I go online many times and show myself to "appear offline" so I can checke-mail, read posts on the Grumble, and, if a customer comes in my gallery, I can simply walk away from the computer and take care of them.
I don't like to get tied up in an IM conversation while I am working because I never know when I will have to leave and I don't want to miss anything from you other warped minds.
(Uh oh, some graemlins have escaped! We're in BIG trouble now.)
