If you have automatic updates turned, the latest update is for Microsoft Office and is required if you are using SP2 for XP and Office. It relates to JPEG processing (GDI+) security. If you go ahead with the update make sure you have your original Office Cd's available before you start. The download for this Office XP service pack 3 is 53MB - don't try it with dial-up unless you can spare the time.

With broadband it worked fine and took about 15 minutes.

You can also order the update by cd from Microsoft for free. They say it takes 4-6 weeks, but I got mine in less than a week.

What does "required" mean in this context?

If we don't install the update, what are the consequences? A new vulnerability? Office software that won't open or function? A self-formatting hard drive?

"Required" is Microsoft's word for the Office SP3 security updates to complement the security updates in XP's SP2. ???

They found a way to invoke programs from JPG files and the fix closes that hole, but you have to upgrade your Office and some other programs to address the problem there as well.
