Just got a email newsletter from Wiz. Seems they have a new cut art library they are selling. I wonder if they have a pdf of the files to view before purchasing.

Good question, I was just thinking about that very thing. Could be worth the $100 bucks or so but it would be nice to know what you're buying.

GOOD NEWS: I called Wizard and they told me how to see and/or print all the 1400 (!!!!) cutarts. Go to Wizard homepage/Customer Center/Guides and Manuals then go down the page and look for "MatDesigner CutArt Volume 1 Library". I will be ordering one when i come back from my vacation! I don't know if you would see them as "new" designs because when they are printed out, in the lower right hand corners the dates are 2005 & 2006... non dated 2007 or 2008. I would see them as "new" because i do not have them and never thought it existed until now. :icon21::icon21:

This is what i received in my email:

Decorative CutArt Volume 1

Wizard is offering a new collection of MatDesigner® CutArt for use with Wizard CMCs. The new collection includes over 1,400 CutArt designs that can be used as decorative mat accents.

The design capabilities are endless with categories like holidays, music, sports, world landmarks, teddy bears and more.

Wizard’s CutArt Volume 1 is available for $99.....................

OK just spent 15 minutes scrolling through them. 12 pages of teddy bears :icon11:

Looks like a few that could be used. But nothing that made me say "I HAVE TO HAVE THIS"

Can't Wizard users convert images to cut files through a standard graphics program? Would speed and convenience be the benefits of buying them as a package?

The first time I opened Corel Draw, it took me about ten minutes to successfully convert my company logo to a line drawing and make it a cut file. Now I use it on the sidewalk signs I cut out of 32x40 matboard sheets on my Valiani MatPro 150i.

Now that I have worked with Corel Draw a little, those file conversions are going even faster. What amazing technology we have at our fingertips, eh?

There's no reason why you can't use Corel Draw to save designs to cut on a Wizard. In fact we even have an ex-Corel programmer on staff.

We have PathTrace because we didn't want to require users to go out and blow $$$ on another software product just to be able to do custom designs. And PathTrace imports a wide variety of DXF files from 3rd party programs, just need to set the bevel type and cut-order.

I blew $199 on Corel Draw X3. Now that X4 is out, X3 can be had for $149.

I have made way more money with that product than I ever will with the Brian Wolf CD.

Now that was blowing money.

If you really want to be helpful. Briefly tell us how to import a Corel file into Mat Designer.

That's not too bad.. I was looking at the $429 price for X4 on Corel's website.

So do you have a VersaLaser? I've always wanted to get my hands on a laser engraver but never been in a shop that has one.

Its rather simple.. to import from CorelDraw to cut you just need to:

1. Choose File->Save As and pick "DXF - AutoCAD" in the Save as Type drop-down. Then click Save.
2. The Export to AutoCAD dialog pops up - I usually choose "AutoCAD 2000" in the version box and then hit OK.
3. Open PathTrace and load the DXF file you just saved.
4. Set your bevel types and starting points for your design, and increment the current layer as needed.
5. Click the cut button, PathTrace will confirm the outside dimensions and then MatDesigner will launch to the cut screen ready to go.

That's it - save it as a DXF, add your bevels and startpoints in PathTrace, and then click cut.

Step #4 is covered in more detail in our PathTrace manual, but really it's very easy.

Yes I have a VersaLASER and a Roland. Two different worlds but they both do beautiful work.

I do a lot of logo work for corporate customers, and 9 times out of 10 when I open the dxf file in Path Trace, there is nothing there. Just a blank screen.

No error messages, nothing.

The Help Desk explained to me that Path Trace is limited on what it can do.

For me to re-trace these logos from a jpg file can take hours.

It would really be nice if it worked.

Seems like for $120.00 you can get a full retail version at the above link, if you are any kind of student.

A lot of the folks I talk to on an engravers forum are having some issues with the new X4. Corel already has a SP1 version out, and some are complaining that it is even worse.

Many are reverting back to X3.

Sounds a lot like Vista and XP.

That is a heck of a good price for the software though.

Thanks j Paul!

As to purchasing as a student, I recently took a $40 online digital art class and it qualified me for student pricing with Corel.

Yea, the only teddies I am interested in have a girl inside.

How would I go about converting from Illustraor to Cut Art? It'd be nice not to have to buy and learn a new program since I've been using Illustrator for years. As it is I'm switching from a Wizard 5000 to an 8000 and from Lifesaver 4 to LF5.
Neither one is a sea change, but a little familiarity somewhere would be nice.

PathTrace has the ability to load DXF files (File > Open > Select Files of Type = DXF). To open PathTrace, Click Start > All Programs > Wizard5 > Tools > PathTrace, or Click the PathTrace Button on the Cut Preview Screen to bring in a Wizard design.

However, since DXFs have not yet been truly standardized in the software industry, there are a large number of varieties. Each program that supports DXFs has their own set of standards and defaults, so you will have to experiment with the different settings and export selections to see what works best for you. Try ungrouping all objects and converting to curves, unit =inches, export text as curves, bitmap as jpeg.
