I just received an Email from United Manufacturers thanking me for my order.
The order is for $28,000 worth of Good Will Hangers.
The hangers are to be shipped to a PO box in San Jose CA.
I'm in Phoenix. AZ. I have ordered nothing!

This is a new one for me.
I sent United an Email telling the to Ship Nothing and Bill me Nothing!
It's the weekend so I can't call them until Monday.

Anyone else have this happen?

No but I would be contacting every single bankcard and bank account for a fraud alert.

You might also give the local police a heads up.

Sounds like maybe United was hacked so I would contact them 10 different ways and hope they can act quickly.

Good Luck.

Thanks, I've done all of that.
Here is the email...
I'm not in San Jose CA and I'm not "The Frame Shop"...

Get in touch with them ASAP (they won't do anything over the weekend either most likely) and let them know. Check all bank accounts, credit and debit cards etc, to make sure that no transactions like this have gone through. Also see what the email address of the sender is (click on it, don't just read the title of it).

I think it is merely a prankster, and the originating IP/city/often the computername can be determined from the email headers. (fingerprint)

They made some mistakes that I see: The destination address doesn't exist. The zip code doesn't exist. The item #s are the same, but the prices are different :)

If this is a prank it's not very funny. Borderline criminal behavior.

Mike, I'm looking at this thread and another one in this same forum where the poster is out of character ( I Think)

Could the Grumble be hacked?

Doug

>could the grumble be hacked?

I dont understand the question or how it applies.

The user got an email, outside of this forum, pretending to be from an industry vendor's online shopping cart system. It had nothing to do with this forum.

Thanks for the replies and thanks Mike for your interest.
I came up with the same phony address, phony zip code, etc.
I have no account with United and my bank account and CC accounts are secure.

I am going to contact United on Monday to see if they can give me more info on where and how the order came in.
I still believe that whoever did this is on the Grumble because it is a framer and frame equipment supplier deal.
Someone just wanted to try to poke a stick in my eye or in the eye of United.

It won't work and now the person who did this might really wind up regretting having done it.:kaffeetrinker_2:

I hope United reports this as fraud, that would basically end your involvement Neil and save you a lot of wasted time. I expect the Police will be able to identify where the order originated from, I have had fraudulent orders of a similar nature placed on my website and criminal charges were made within a few days.

The item #s didn't match up with the prices, so I suspect United's answer will be that there is no such order in their system. It doesn't seem real, to me. I doubt that ANY order exists, and suspect that you'll find no charges to your cards.

Check the email headers for fingerprints.

United is working with our IT Team to try and track down the child who thinks this is funny.

We certainly don't, and I am sure Neil doesn't either

All web orders are reviewed before processing and we had this order put aside for verification because of the discrepancies in customer information as well as the large purchase.

One could only hope that any of our framing colleagues would need this many hangers.

Go-get-em. Hope you find the bad guy.

This scam strikes close to home (The Grumble).

We're all pretty good at spotting the fake order for shinny gold frames but Neil's e-mail is different.

Doug

Did they actually log into your account at UMS to place this order?

I have no account with United and my bank account and CC accounts are secure.

Makes this all the weirder:

...we had this order put aside for verification because of the discrepancies in customer information as well as the large purchase.

Sounds like there was an actual order placed to the account of someone who used Neil's email address, for items with invalid item numbers.

I see that the vendor said so, but I still find that hard to believe because of the item #/price discrepancy. My take it that it was probably JUST an email that didn't involve their website or his credit card. But i'm sure they'll figure it out, and will have a lot of info about the originating IP and Computer - after looking at the fingerprints within the message headers.

Any news Neil? This is so weird and such a waste of time both for you and United. Even if this was meant as a joke, whoever did this, this is not funny at all.

I would assume as well that this was an email order, if the item numbers/prices don't match with the website.
