We need another poll.

Here is something I would like to know:

Since 46% of us don't have a full time employee and 75% of us have less than 2 part time employees, how can we attend a trade show?

Close?
Operate on limited ability (only pickups)?
Hire someone temporarily.
Don't go because of staffing problems?

I noticed Baer says:
We are shutting down for Vegas that whole week....

Some questions for your poll: </font>
  • How many times have you closed your shop to attend a conference.</font>
  • How many times have you closed your business to attend to business needs,ie Post Office, Shipping</font>
  • How many times have you closed your business for personal time, ie vacation!</font>
Bet you answer to the third is A LOT less than your answers to the first two!

then there is:

doctors visits
see your kid play soccer, etc
court...... to fight that parking ticket
sick days
getting the car fixed
etc
etc

Just close the store with a "GONE FISHING" sign in the window.... like everyone else. Posting the sign a week in advance is preferrable though.

Whenever I go somewhere, I close the store as I am a solo business. The sign always tells the customer to come back when I reopen and get 10% off. I am almost always swamped for the first three days after I come back.
After 12 years, customers are used to it and look forward to hearing about where I went and what shots I got. After all, they paid for my vacation!!

I also have a "be right back" sign for running to the throne.

For lunch, I have a sign where I post time left and expected time to be back.

That's the way we do it up here in Maine and if you all don't like it, then move back to Mass where you came from! So there!

How did you know I was from MA? I'm not sure I like your tone!!!!!

Wait that was the M***hole in me speaking. Actually while reading your post I was laughing! Thanks for the chance to chuckle!

I usually go ta Atlanta and Las Vegas and go for the entire show.
We close down and are swamped when we returrn. Maybe we should close down more often. I feel it is more valuable to close and attend than not attend at all.

‘course you’re from Massachusetts, Bob. Duh!!! Most of the Save-the-Gay-Baby-Whales, Tree Huggin’ Sumbiches come from there. The smart people, like me, get out and move to New Hampshire.

After I said goodbye to my last employee I NEVER got sick. My employees were making me sick.

I did close up to go to trade shows and I put a sign in the window that said something like, "Gone to classes to learn how to separate you from more of your money."

People seemed to appreciate my candor. They know I don't fish.

Close
Hire a temporary person
Don't go

All of the above - depending on what resources are available at the time.

Framah, I have your Maine-attitude.... I think it is a very personal business we are in and I am still here for my customers and they are some pretty nice people - and they understand that life is short and we have to do what we have to do!!! It is not afterall, life or death! And if they are too impatient to return, I feel sorry for them - we are well worth the wait!!

JFeig - if you post a sign a week before - that only catches a few of the people - since I don't think we as framers are on people's weekly schedule of stops - gee I wish we were - so I usually tell the customers who's work would be done about the time I will be gone - that is the situation - if I have to hurry up a project, I will or in most cases, the customers understand and are okay with a little longer delivery time.

People are pretty good!!

Roz

I post a sign on the door with our normal hours, and then I also have a sign that has all of our "closed" dates for the whole year. We are in a small touristy area, and I can now predict which weeks(s) can be closed with no/near no affect on business.

I think it is good to offer a discount for a customer that sees the closed for ____reason. 10% seems like a good one. It is also nice to inform customers as to why you are gone...Ron's comment is funny, but I might not put that. Unless people know I am a character then it is part of your charm.

Good ideas for next month's poll!
