I have used netscape as an email address for several years now and suddenly it won't let me access the account.
I keep getting an error message which of course means nothing to me.
Do they think we have any idea what their codes mean? or where to find out?
Sheesh!

I was prompted yesterday to sign up for an AOL account.

Does this mean that they have merged?

Hi Deb,

AOL bought Netscape in 1998.

Looking at their website, i found this info. It looks like the final cutoff date for netscape email was 8/25. They converted all their usernames over to AOL/AIM accounts. You should be able to log in with the same account info.

I hope this is helpful info
Mike

What is happening to Netscape® Mail?

In order to provide you with the best free webmail service, Netscape Mail is being upgraded to the more robust AIM® Mail service*. The transition will take place August 25th. Your e-mail address and login process will remain the same. The look and feel of the service will change slightly, but all the features and functionality you have today will continue.

What are the advantages of upgrading from Netscape Mail to AIM Mail?
There are several advantages of upgrading to AIM Mail. They include:

Online storage is increased from 250 MB to 2 GB, plenty to keep all your mail. Improved speed and reliability. Integrated web calendar with access to shared calendars. IMAP compliance, enabling you to use Microsoft Outlook , or another 3rd party mail client of your choice. See the IMAP Setup page at http://about.aol.com/faq/openmailaccess for details on accessing your mail through IMAP. Integrated photo sharing through AOL® Pictures and instant messaging. Screen Name linking, so you can check all your e-mail accounts with one sign-on. Unlimited time to keep your e-mails, so critical messages won't be lost. ** Multiple sites at which you can check your mail including Netscape.com, AOL.com and AIMToday.com.

Do I keep my same Netscape e-mail address?
Yes. In fact, your e-mail address is yours for life***. Even if you choose not to use it for a while, the address will remain yours to reactivate at any time. So, you can continue to send and receive e-mail at your current Netscape e-mail address.

Are there any differences between the Netscape Mail and AIM Mail service?
The differences are the advantages of AIM Mail outlined above. In addition, your e-mail account welcome screen will include capsules of the top news stories.

Note: If you are using Netscape's Mail and Newsgroups client, please see the IMAP Setup page for new server information at http://about.aol.com/faq/openmailaccess.

Does my old address book still work?
Yes. You will find your address book completely intact. Plus, with the AIM Mail service, the address book can be set-up to automatically add in all your new friends.

Can I still sign up for a new Netscape Mail account?
No. New Netscape Mail accounts are no longer being accepted. With the added advantages of AIM Mail, we believe new users will be completely satisfied with the AIM Mail service.

Is Netscape being phased out / going away?
No. Netscape.com has recently relaunched as a social news portal. Check it out at http://netscape.com.

What is AIM?
AIM is everything you need to communicate, including e-mail, IM, text, voice, video at the click of a button. Now you can look your buddies in the eye, hear their voices or take them with you everywhere you go.

E-mail - AIM Mail is integrated into the Instant Messenger™ service and includes 2GBs of storage, web calendar integration, IMAP compliance, industry-leading spam and virus protection, integrated photo sharing and Screen Name linking. IM - There's room in your Buddy List® feature for 500 of your closest friends. Organize your chats with tabbed IMs, and stay in touch with the Universal Address Book. Text - Access your Buddy List® feature on your mobile device to send and receive IMs. You can also send IMs from your computer to your buddies' cell phones. Voice - Use your PC to talk with anyone on the AIM service, no matter where they are. Our Voice Chat feature lets you talk to up to 20 buddies at a time. Or activate your free AIM® Phoneline to get a local phone number with unlimited incoming calls, caller ID, and voicemail delivered to your AIM mailbox.

Do I have a choice about this move?
All Netscape Mail users are being upgraded. The old Netscape Mail service is not capable of offering competitive storage, security or features (like IMAP access). As such, it is necessary to move Netscape users off of this legacy system and upgrade all to a new, more robust service, while maintaining the user's same e-mail address.

* For Netscape Mail users who also have an AOL® Mail account with the same Screen Name, the Netscape Mail service will be upgraded to AOL Mail, not AIM Mail. All Netscape mail will be transferred and placed in folders which will be located under the 'Saved on AOL' section. Messages not manually moved to Saved on AOL will be kept for a limit of up to approximately 27 days. Note: This does not apply for AIM Mail accounts. All mail will be saved on AIM Mail up to 2GB.

** For Netscape Mail users who are upgraded to AOL Mail, messages not manually moved to Saved on AOL will be kept for a limit of up to approximately 27 days. Note: This does not apply for AIM Mail accounts. All mail will be saved on AIM Mail up to 2GB.

*** Maintenance of Screen Name and e-mail account subject to AOL's Terms of Service, Network Registered User Agreement, and the terms of the AOL products you use. Regular sign-in required
