:bdh::bdh::bdh:

I decided to take this to another thread since this has become a topic elsewhere.
This has become an issue because I use a different font then the default. Basically I do this because it is easier for me to read. Some people have considered it shouting, relating it to "netiquette"(net etiquette).
While using a different style and size font does foremost denote individuality. Yet it may also indicate a visual handicap of the author. (I have to raise my hand on that one.) So do we admonish the author for having a visual handicap and deny them any aspect of individuality. Or do we celebrate individuality, handicap bar none?

I wonder what they told Beethoven.

You may have noticed I used a verity of font styles above at Font size #4.

While some people considered this to be "shouting" (netiquette), it is not. In the world of the internet, blogosphere, Usenet and e-mail "shouting" is using all caps and talking rude.

To site my sources are the following links.

http://email.about.com/cs/netiquettetips/qt/et020801.htm

"...Internet
This form of typography also appears in on-line forums. It was once an inevitable byproduct of using machines with limited support for lowercase text (such as certain dumb terminals, early Apple II models), but as full support of ASCII became standard, it became solely identified with "shouting" or attention-seeking behaviour. As a result, netiquette generally discourages the use of all caps..."

So not to appear to be a RICHARD HEAD OR A MOTHER TRUCKER, I am not shouting or trying to be rude. So if I find it comfortable to write in a different font, I do, I will.:faintthud:

So let's have fun and everyone go out to play, NOW!

Paul, this isn't in Warped!

BobEK, my background is in assistive tech and augmentative communication, specifically using custom adapted and modified computers. So while I know and agree with the adaption, and curb cuts for the internet I will be a devil's advocate and state that screen enlargers and readers are for your benefit, and should not impinge on the "enjoyment and use" of the internet on able-bodied users.

In other words, get a bigger monitor, a Kurzwiel reader, and/or a good screen reader software. The builtins in Windows will give you a good enough strategy to use on public terminals, but for your home and work system nothing beats a system custom designed and adapted to your personal needs. Also don't do it yourself, as you will be wasting money and then having to chase that money with more when you do get an Assistive Technology Evaluation done. AT Evaluation Centers were set up in every state during GHWBush's reign. While many states did poorly setting up the centers the "users" who benefited the most were people with vision issues.

Now not being the devil's advocate I can say I see no problem with huge text in threads, as we all change our fonts to suit the needs of the posting, green=sarcastic... But being a person of failing eyesight, the ctrl and roll is a good feature! Now if I could get eyeglasses with that feature!

Not sure about other browsers, but in Safari you can go to the View menu or use the keyboard shortcuts of Cmd-+ for Make Text Bigger or Cmd-— for Make Text Smaller. This does not affect the way posted text looks- only how it appears on your own monitor.
 Rick

I was taken aback slightly when I first encountered the large, bold lettering with the unusual font. I figured it was someone with a vision problem, so I let it go. It does make me wonder how that person can engage in dialog when every one else is using the regular font. How can he read what others wrote?

My thought would be to use a larger version of the regular font, preferably without the bold button pushed, unless bold is a must. This would probably not seem so much as attention getting yelling.

I'm sorry but using several differents fonts like the first post is just obnoxious. Did I miss something?

Having a sibling who is legally blind there are ways like others have suggested to make the situation easier for those who struggle.

But judging from the end of the post, it just sounds more like someone is enjoying playing a game.

Did you not get enough attention as a kid BobEK?

Paul, this isn't in Warped!

Should be though - shouldn't it? I'd've put it in warped. Where would you have put it?

Naff all to do with framing - and if a topic appears here that is naff all to do with framing - then it takes what comes.

Net etiquette is naff all to do with framing - but anyway, to stay on topic - I really don't care what size/font/color/case anyone uses - it's either easy to read or hard to read and if it's hard to, then unless it's veeeeeery important - I won't read it.

Huge blocks of text with no paragraph breaks?

Next!

Hi Bob,

For what it's worth, I thought you were an angry poster until I read
your explanation in a previous thread. It's just so different from all the
other posts on here. Now I just know that you're typing for the sake
of visual clarity. What about if, down under the post where it gives
you room to put a saying, you make a note explaining why you
use a larger font?

I chuckled when you wrote 'Richard Head'. I have been known to
use the term 'Richard Noggin' from time to time. :)

Thanks for contributing.
I have a nephew who can see just fine but is deaf.
He is a great kid, and patient with people who falsely assume
he can hear. But it does limit his ability to communicate
with non-signers sometimes. I have really enjoyed e-mailing
back and forth as it gives us a chance to connect.

Bob, my backgound is in argumentative communication too. So, I have to ask...How come your eyesight is only bad on certain lines? :) Also, since you are typing it, wouldn't you already know what it said?

Personally, I don't have a problem with the multi-font size thing. I was always taught that mats should be of differing widths too. Besides, my eyesight also gets that way sometimes. Of course, it's usually when I've been drinking.

Cornell, is that you?

I was the complainer. My complaint stands - I guess if the offending font is necessary for Bob to read his own posts, he must not need to read any others.

No, I don't plan to block Bob - he has had good things to offer. I'm only asking for a little courtesy.

Paul there are 2 Bobs posting in here! I was in AugComm (WordsPlus New England Rep, who or where did you hang your hat?) The other Bob has the vision issues. My vision has been going downhill, due to age! I first noticed that I was missing my exits on the interstates as I couldn't read the signs til after I passed them, but GPS got me over that hurdle! I also fell asleep reading instruction manuals, thought it was the manuals til I started falling asleep reading books too. I got a slight astigmatism or golidlock's vision, can't see near can't see far, but can see fine if the distance is just right!

PAUL!!! I just read your first line, argumentative not augmentative! Got me good! Glad I'm geting my eyes checked in 3 weeks! I lost my last pair of glasses, 5 years ago, and I think I may be due for another pair soon!

I'm with Pat...I do not get it. You'd think it would be every one else's posts that would be where a vision problem is a concern. I guess the whole thing just sounded like a smartass post. Maybe I am wrong.

BobD, I was wondering if someone was gonna catch that. :)

Reading vision seems to be the first thing to go as we age. I heard that 90% of people over 40 need reading glasses.

I find my night vision when driving is not as good as it used to be. Funny thing is, I can speed read manuals, but if I try to read a novel, I'll get to the end of a page and have to start over.

Thanks Seth. I didn't know about that.

Dunt bother me none!

I think all caps is “shouting”, but mixed case is okay. Personally, I enjoy reading the text in Comic Sans – it’s a refreshing change from the norm.

For a Mac, it’s “command +” for most browers. The “command” key is in the same position as “control” on a PC, I believe.

On my computer, it's Ctrl and then scroll with the little wheel on your mouse. Works great! You turn it up to get bigger and down to get smaller. If you don't have a wheel-thingie on your mouse, then I have no clue what to use.

Snobs-R-Us

:vomit:

I started this thread because in the original thread we were talking about handling glass and gloves. In that Thread I was accused of shouting because I author my posts differently with a font of a different size and style. I explained the difference in my posts and shouting. I also listed several sources that could be reviewed that clearly define shouting. It seems a FEW have chosen to ignore reading those links and would rather find fault with me.

And from the conversation from the FEW posters I am to be deemed a bad member because I refuse to use the same font as they do. I also explained that I do have a vision problem and it is more comfortable for me to use a larger and darker font then the default (normal-HTML header #2). And the FEW have basically called me a liar and someone who would do a blog battle for personal entertainment.

SO here is what I think about the FEW, you’re nuts. Furthermore, you FEW could be this years poster children for the Bias, Discriminative Snobs Club. Word is next year they are going to find fault with people that need wheelchair ramps

You’re find fault with me because I choose to write and read in a font that is a little darker and JUST 2 time bigger then the default for personal comfort; JERKS.

For everyone else I apologize for taking up your time with this senseless drudge.

I think if you had just let it go and carried on with your different fonts, you'd have just become, assuming you stick around - that guy with the different font.

Most don't give one really - and some just wonder why - but you asked and you'd be defying the law of averages if you did not get negative responses. But negative as they may have been, they were not personal - no-one called you a jerk, or nuts.

Understand that 'the few' have earned respect over years that you have not and by bad mouthing them you'll just alienate yourself.

Yup and this was my first post in THIS thread. Go look at your start of this thread and that is what I based my posts on. One of my sisters has had macular degeneration since her 30's. She could no longer do her med tech job, was no longer allowed to drive while her kids were still young, etc. So believe me I understand quite well visual disabilities and how people with them have to compensate...or even have their whole world turn upside down. How would you like training several years in a specialized field, working in that field for over a decade and then find out you have a disease typically only seen in the elderly and being told you can no longer work in that field. Now that is something to cry about buddy.

I didn't get your chosen use of several fonts or your tone in your opening post. It looked and sounded obnoxious, in hindsight it still does. If you want to use a slightly larger font knock your socks off buddy. But if you are going to start a thread in the fashion you did, expect reaction to it. After all isn't that what you wanted.

So if you need to use a larger font to see better, exactly what do you do when you read other responses? It seems to me you got some very helpful suggestions using the ctrl +. That was the point being made to you.

On this forum, if you had handled your initial post in a more reasonable manner instead of trying to be cute with all the different sized fonts, your links and your obnoxious tone, you would certainly have been well received by me. So call me a jerk all you would like, it has no bearing on me what so ever. Just don't play the martyr card to me.

I always figure it is a personal need thing when I see large fonts and bold type. But I always wonder what good does it do If the text you are reading is still normal?
I use Mozilla and when my eyes are tired I just ctrl + the text so I can see better. It doesn't do me any good to make my text larger because I still have trouble reading what others have written.
