No matter how hard I try to shim and jiggle this profile - whenever I tighten the screws on the backs of stretchers, the corners open up!

HELP!!!!

What is the magic secret to getting these durned things together on a regular artist stretcher???

Yeah, that's an "issue" with that profile. Try cutting a piece of matboard slightly smaller than the painting and putting it between the painting and the frame before installing the screws. This may lessen the torquing effect. It also serves to protect the back of the canvas. Also, be careful not to over-tighten the screws.

Yeah, what he said. And stretchers will get torqued downward, loosening the stretching job you did if you tighten the screws too tight. Put a shim in the back of either fome or mat board to account for the shape of the stretcher bar....

I ended up stapling two strips of narrow matboard along the inner edge of the stretcher and then another sheet to cover the back.

What a pain.

They work great on strainers, which are flat on the bottom. Just not stretchers.

Customers who seek really thin frames just love them, especially when the painting goes right up to the edge.

I took out the hardware and put the sample in the scrap aluminum box known as "The Beer Fund". Problem solved.

I don't think articulated hardware would help, Seth. The secret seems to be in building up the back of the stretcher, inside the outer ridge.
