As we all know, there are 'White Pages', 'Yellow Pages', 'Reverse Number' searches, but I find myself in need...and NOT to be used for ilegal purposes:

Is there a way of finding a person's name and address by searching, using their internet address? For example: I get a personal, friendly email from someone, and I can't, for the life of me figure out who it is from. Probably someone from the distant past.

They have one of those emails like fh56tsx2@whatever.com. Then they don't sign the email. I know that I know this person, but I don't remember who it is, and I would LOVE to get in touch with them, via phone.

This has come up a lot, and it would be r-e-a-l-l-y good the be able to enter a email and get who sent it, and from where, and their phone number.

If its a "real" email address I might could help. By real I mean an address that is from the ISP and not yahoo, hotmail, or one of the any 1000 other online services.

The header contains an IP address that you sometimes can track back to a city. Not an exact science but its close.

There are also some other ip searches you can do that sometimes gives more information but again not alwasy. But without that IP from a real ISP I don't think you will have any luck at all.

Now why don't you just email them something like, "Who are you?"

Try google.com with the email address. If it's posted anywhere on the web (a forum like this one, a home page, etc), you'll find it.

Take Jays advice and just email them back.
There is no way you can get closer than a town from searching, and as Charles says, even then it has to be a real email address.
Isp's will not give out details of their customers,(data protection, civil liberties etc,)Mick

Sounds pretty hopeless...thanks, though, for the suggestions, help and advice.

Jay and Mick, good advice, and that's what I would normally do. In this case, however, this is a person, I think I know from the dim past. They appear to be playing, "Remember the time...?", authenticating that we know each other, but "Remember the time?" applies to a lot of people from that era, some of which I would just as soon not contact.

Guess I could wait and see if they're forthcoming with more emails, and will finally say, "It's ME!!!" But patience is not a great virtue of mine, except with my dog, and I KNOW it's not HIM!

I think anyone who has an email address like that and doesn't sign the mail is about as rude as someone who comes in the store and asks..."Do you know who I am?"...then you're put on the spot and finally find out they are from some totally out of context place. Why do people do that?

The next time someone does that I think I'll respond..."Oh, I didn't recognize you with your clothes on".
