HELP!!!

Need Idea's/ways on how to install a Large picture frame from the ceiling.

I have a large picture framed and the customer wants to hang it from the ceiling cause the wall it goes infront of is tile. The picture is 6ft x 4ft. I was thinking of putting D-Rings on the top and hanging it with heavy duty wire with hooks in ceiling. Is there a certain type of hooks I should use if its done that way? Or does anyone else have a better method? Please help customer will be in between 1 to 2 hours.

Thanks,

It is probably around 20lbs... the frame is Larson Juhl 655252, and we used clear plexi so it wouldnt have so much weight. and back board is foamcore.

You might want to actually weigh the piece!! Your estimate of around 20lbs is way off. If you are using 1/4" plexi in a 4x6 ft frame...which you should.. the plexi alone is around 35lbs.

Knowing the actual weight of the piece will help with how to hang it.

If the frame is wide enough, I would use triple hole D-ring hangers at the top of the sides on the back of the frame and then it would depend on what the ceiling is made from as to whether you need toggle bolt anchors with a hook in them instead of the regular bolt.

If you are able to go directly into wood, then just use large screw hooks and hang it like that.

We use arakawa in the gallery and they hold a tremendous amount of weight. We use them on our framed mirror display wall too.

If the area has a lot of traffic I might suggest a gallery rod system instead, because the arakawa system uses steel cables and if bumped things will sway. Not wanting to deal with it I've just sent my customers right to unitedmfrs.com If you search for "french" there you will see rods. I've never purchased them myself but I've never received any complaints from the customers I've sent there.

edit: nevermind now I'm realizing the tile probably goes all the way up to the ceiling. I'd just run screaming. Actually we have a relationship with a professional installer that we refer people to when we would rather poke an ice pick in our eye than deal with it.

Framah is right....... if you are not using 1/4" plexi, and it is going to hang from the ceiling face down.......You have a real potential for the plexi bowing out of the front of the frame and a possible hazard. Just might want to check.

Keep it Safe.

What's wrong with hanging on the tile?
You drill in through the grout, use anchors of some sort in the wall behind and there ya go. I just did it for some pot racks.
A picture that large and heavy(?) I can see being too heavy for ceiling hooks. Unless they're crazyheavyduty.
Do you have an installer in your area you can ask?

The way I do this:

Nice looking decorative hooks into the ceiling right against the wall - use a stud finder on the ceiling to find the joists and make sure the screws go into the joists.

decorative hooks from hardware supplier like Lee Valley Tools

Go to a fabric/drapery store and find something suitable to hang with - drapery ropes, ribbon, fabric sewn into a tube, leather shoelaces, something that suits the decor and color.

D-rings on the back near the top so it hangs flat aginst the wall - may need a little spacer behind at the bottom between frame and wall to make it vertical.
