I am looking for advice. A customer has 4 cut glass panels from the early 40's that have been mirrored. There are 4 corner pieced that complete the border. in the middle will be a new beveled mirror.
I am looking for the lightest weight surface to glue them to?....and a glue that will not dissolve the surface of either the mirror or backing...
Its finished size will be about 46" x 52".
Depending on the strength of the mount, it will be placed in a floater frame or mounted with replicas of the original glass mirror clips.

Suggestions?

This months issue of "woodsmith" mag. calls for the use of a product called mirror mastic for mounting a mirror. This could probably be picked up at a glass and window shop.

Mirror Mastic for sure.

I use 1/4 hardboard (masonite). Make sure that when you glue down the mirror that you leave a gap between the panels. I use a utility knife blade. This is for contraction of the backing. Had to replace a mirror on one of the first multi-panel mirrors we did. It went into a condo party house. It was not airconditioned for the 2 weeks after we installed it. Needless to say it contracted and cracked one of the mirrors.

As to the weight, forgetaboutit. Its going to way a ton anyways. Make sure you use Z-bar to hang it with.
