This mat needs to be cut out of 8 ply (a neutral color...it will be fabric wrapped) and has one circle opening w a 45 degree bevel, one rectangular opening with a 45 degree bevel, two rectangular openings with reverse bevels and two rectangular openings with 90 degree bevels. This can't be done on a CMC because of the 90 degree openings. Overcuts are not a problem because we are wrapping the finished mat in fabric...Anyone out there want to do it? OR know someone else who might?? We'll pay well....

We sell a lot of duplex mats..paper wrapped, fabric wrapped, gilded & painted bases. We need a 90 degree bevel for the top mat. In the case of the multiple opening mat I will be inserting an inlay in one of the 90 degree openings and creating a mini shadow box in which we will top mount a photo in the second 90 degree opening. Regarding the Speed Mat cutter...we have been so disappointed.

ps--I didn't give my former employee the CMC. We returned the CMC we were leasing to Wizard. I gave him a nice, big Fletcher (dumb, dumb, dumb). I thought the Speed Mat cutter would allow the rest of us who were not very experienced mat cutters to replace him. With the amount of time we've spent fooling with the Speed Mat we could be master level mat cutters by now.

We don't have a CMC any more because so many of our single opening mats required 90 degree "bevels". I also don't employ the guy that used to do our mat cutting for us. I let him go a year ago and gave him our wall mount cutter and mat cutter thinking the Speed Mat Cutter I bought would replace them...we're not so crazy about the Speed Mat cutter.......

Why do so many of your mats require 90 degree bevels?

You gave away your CMC and wall cutter in favor of a Speed Mat cutter?

Is this an April Fools' thread?

I've only been framing for about 19 years, but have never had a customer insist on a 90 degree bevel. When showing the bevel undesirable, we do what framers everywhere do, and just reverse the bevel.

Hi,

Just a note, anyone out there with a dual-head Gunnar 601 CMC or a Gunnar 3001 CMC could easily cut these mats for you with 90 degree "straight" cuts, 45 degree "bevel" cuts, reverse bevel cuts, circles, etc... all combined, even into the thickest 8 ply available, in one un-interrupted process. If anyone is interested, you can have a look at them in action at www.gunnar-international.com

You could contact the guys from Gunnar, who could put you in touch with someone close by to you? Tel: +1 705 722 7856

Cheers,

Jared

Am I missing something. If you need a straight cut that is going to be fabric wraped, why not just use a utility knife and a straight edge.

Dave, didn't you mean to pose that question: "if you're going to wrap the mat, why not just cut it all with a utility knife?" :D

except I do understand the perdiciment.... the question I was having on the "straight" cuts... are these for sink mats? If so, the reverse bevel will do just fine and give you a compression fit with out the block wall syndrom of the edge.

Cut those openings with a utility knife in 8 ply?

Not only will Baer cut through 8-ply with a utility knife, he'll cut a circle with a 45-degree bevel through 3 layers of 8-ply.. :D

But I was curious too why 90-degree cuts are needed over reverse bevels...

scurren, this is the mat Steve is refering to 24-ply, at a 47degree bevel... [my hand never did cut a 45, to beefy so it stands just a wee bit higher]

But for a combination of 4-ply, 8-ply and 1/4" foam core... this is a better example. [1/2 hour to lay out, 15 minutes to cut]

all utility knife. ;)
