I have four rolls of Mylar Tape - I bought them years ago, one each in bright gold, matte gold, bright silver, matte silver. I think I was gonna use them for decorating mats, but I really never did. They looked too tacky.

But they were expensive and they are Mylar, so.......

Can I use them to back fillets and seal frame packages? The adhesive is still as grippy as it was when I bought them (tried a few inches today and it worked perfectly).

I figure it could supplement my Lineco metalized framer tape? Plus this stuff is way stronger even though it is much thinner.

That may be one of the reasons I bought them. This tape is too thin and the foam board would need a lot of layers of gesso and a lot of sanding - and I do mean a LOT!. This tape is really thin.

I have never found any kind of self-adhesive tape which adheres to a bevel of foam core. Gotta use something with glue adhesive.

Just thought I could use these up as archival barrier tape.

Why does it have to adhere to the bevel of the foamcore? If you press the bevel onto the tape, can't you just keep the tape taught as you press it down onto the face (and back) of the foam. Wouldn't that snug up the tape on the bevel?

That tape, which used to be used for masking slides, could work to line rabbets or it could be used to line the tape that is used of seal packages. If you take thin package sealing tape, like 3M 371 0 and apply it to the edge of the glass, on top of the mat and a backing board, like Coroplast, the Mylar tape can be applied to the inside of the package tape, where it comes off the glazing. This will form a barrier that will keep tape adhesive from polluting the mat and both layers of tape can be pulled to the back of the backing board, where they can be burnished tight.
The Mylar tape should lap the corners and the package tape should be folded up, from the bottom, before it is folded around from the side, at the corners, so that it forms downward lapping folds that will shed water and improve the water resistance of the package.

If you bought that tape several years ago - the adhesive is probably way past it's shelf life and probably wont stick very well. Although Mylar itself is not a barrier against acid migration, the adhesive itself is probably a barrier just because the acid can't get through the goo.

Greg, I have been using bits and pieces of this tape all along and once burnished the adhesive is the best I have ever seen - better than any tape I have ever bought.

I used to have those same tapes. Got them many years ago from United... or maybe even S&W :icon11: . They did have an incredibly long shelf life, as I recall.
 Rick

I bought these from United. They are huge rolls, 1" wide tape. One of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" kind of things.......
