We have an old newspaper that's very brittle and needs special care. I have notes from the trade show about mylar encapsulation, have any of you used this method, have you been happy with it? With this particular piece the customer doesn't necessarily want to pay a conservator to work on it, we simply want to keep the paper in tact for as long as possible. It will be matted and framed after it is encapsulated.

Thanks!

We use it regularly and love it.
It helps to have a framed encapsulated sample in the store so folks have a notion of how it looks finished.

Encapsulation is for thin things, like a document.

For thick things I suggest a two-piece Wrap Mount, which is a variation of the Book mount adapted for newspapers. Wrap the newspaper with vertical and horizontal strips of clear film, secured to a sturdy, undersized backer. Then attach the backer to your main mount board.

Jim, when are we going to see your book on all things encapsulation? I'll be your 1st customer!

Too late. Jim's been distributing epic, book-like handouts at his classes for years.

I'm still watching for the IDG book, "Clear Film Mounting For Dummies" though.

</font>[/QUOTE]I just wonder if Jim could be persuaded to compile a "The Best of Jim". It would be a great seller. His earlier advice to me pushed me to order the Mylar and actually do encapsulation.

Jim? Oh, Ji-i-m-m-m-m!

Flattery will get you almost anything you want from me. :D Seriously, thanks for your kind words.

To answer the question, the book to which you refer is on my should-have-done-it-by-now list.

This experience-in-process has greatly increased my admiration and respect for Vivian Kistler, Paul Frederick, and all the others who have spent countless hours preparing to share their knowledge with us through their books.
