Question for you all - what would you generally charge for a high volume Movie Poster framing contract (simple metal frames). Also, about how long would it take one person to assemble 100 frames? What are your costs on work like this?

Thanks.

The last few large orders we did (55+) took us-in actuality- 4 days to build. We generally ask our clients to give us the standard wait, 14 days, but then to give us a few extra "just in case". In case what? In case there were lengths that came in damaged, wrong, or just plain "off". Plus, we have other client pieces that were brought in before them, and we need to respect those customers.

Give yourself time to get the materials in and check them. Figure out how long its going to take you to cut the glass, foamboard, etc. I usually time myself with 1 piece, and figure from there. Your time is valuable.

At 50+ pieces, we give a 25% discount, at 100, we tend to go as high as 40%. I figure out retail and cost on these jobs, to see where the money is going, and how I can still make a decent profit. Find out what kind of deal your rep can get you; a lot of reps will give you an extra discount if you place an order like this with them.

I agree with doing this thru a rep. Dont just take samples from them, if you do that is a waste. Use them, talk to them, see what they can do for you. Most can or do have some wiggle room to help you as well as themselves out. Put a little pressure on them, never call just one rep. They work harder whe they are competing.

Just off the top of your head, how much profit would you expect to make on 100 frames like this? I realize it all depends on materials cost, etc. but just generally?

Here was my last big run:

55 frames, each with 2- 5 x 7 photos
Single Black Mat (2" border)
Single 2" Frame
Nameplate
CC glass

Cost: approx. $45 ea
Charged: $100 ea.
Retail: $139-ish

Not too bad, really. We used to discount heavily for jobs like this, but I put the big kabosh on that. We were spending soooo much time doing them, and not paying ourselves for it.

With my 'poster frame special', I am already offering that type of framing for 69 bucks. Using OEM metal, 100 frames would need about 2 1/2 boxes of moulding. Most all of the distributors for OEM metal already have the price cut to the bone and can offer you little or no discount on that amount of product. You can however negotiate on that much glass and foamboard.

Paid up front? or got to wait on your money? I would give them a better break if they pay up front.

As for time on each. It really depends on the type of saw you have. With my Ledsome, I could production cut those out in less than an hour. Once the press is hot my 44 x 66 in press would turn out 2 mounts every minute or so using SpeedMount. Wear gloves when handling glass and there would be no need to clean it. Assembly, 5 or 10 min each.
