I have a client from Europe who brought in a photo that was mounted on aluminum with Strectcher bars on the back so that it floats off the wall. It looks very European and very good. Is there anyone in the States that is doing this type of mounting and can someone let me know who that would be?
Thanks,
Alan

Well any pro framer should be able to do that. Its very simple, your just drymounting on to aluminum that same way you dry mount on to say foam core.
And then attach the strips in the back with glue, and your set.

I did this almost 40 years ago and I am not European, LOL

Of course it can be done. Look at the Studio El collection of prints in the Luxe collection, ready to hang on brushed aluminum. Did you see them at WCAF? I'm showing them to local corporate client right now as an alternative to framed prints. I'll still make a tidy profit if the order goes through and I have to say they look impressive.

The reason you don't see much of this is because the material is somewhat expensive compared to other materials. I use a lot of aluminum sign blanks which are painted white by the manufacturer and they run 10 times what I pay for heat activated foam core. Unprepped aluminum is not much less expensive and once you add the cost of adhesive film and stretcher bars you might as well do a professional frame job.

My prices are very low for the industry and I charge $12.50 to dry mount a 24x36 on foam core. Doing the same job on brushed aluminum with stretcher bars would be in the $150-200 range.

Today (yes on Sunday of the holiday weekend) I printed, framed, delivered and hung a 29x40 photo with a 2" wood frame, mounted, double mat and clear glass for $174.

Now as far as your question of who will do this type of work, I would be glad to do it and if there was any quantity involved I would be happy to do it in the $150 range including the printing. I would also be happy to discount further for serious quantity.

Jeff, you might qualify this before making the offer. "Including the printing" is pretty nebulous. Can you contact print from my 12x20 inch negs on platinum palladium for that price? Meet my quality standards in printing? Do stock standard exhibition quality, selenium toned Silver B&W prints?

How about Ilfochrome Classic (Cibachrome) prints? Masking and contrast control?

I have mounted many on stainless steel but never Aluminum. Main reason for me is the oxidation on the aluminum as it ages. Saw a few that had oxidized and the cleaning attempts smeared the stuff across the print.

Are we starting a new thread with a different question? The question at hand was answered and if you would like to know about your specific question I would gladly look into it if I thought it would be profitable.

Alan,
Look for my October PFM Mastering Mounting column. Mounting and floating off the wall is a technique that has been done in Europe for decades, but is finally becioming popular here in the USA. Everyone who has already answered have good suggestions for you, bottom line...yes any framer can do the mounting to aluminum and floating, but face mounting is another issue.
