Our customer wants his antique rug mounted in an acrylic box. The hand made wool rug is 40" x 55" and about 1/8" thick with frilles on top and bottom. It is light and pliable so weight is not a problem. My question is how best to mount the rug so it is secure to the fabric wrapped mounting board which I will make.

Hi goarts. Welcome to the Grumble. More people will see your question if you post it on the regular board - not everyone reads Tips. How's that for a tip?

Regarding the rug, you're going to have to sew it down using cotton thread. But I think I hate the idea of encasing it in a plastic box. Wool absorbs moisture like a sponge. Let's see what everyone else has to say. Kit

Hope this question gets some play because I'm wondering if you can vent the sides or top/bottom of the plexi box if you want air to get in. Might there also be the possibility that you actually inhibit some moisture from reaching the rug by enclosing in an unvented box?

Sorry about the double post: ???

I would check with Small Corp as a reference for mounting panels. They make and supply both the plex boxes and support panels to archivists working with textiles. Whether you buy form them or not they are a wealth of information. www.smallcorp.com

The Smithsonian uses DEEP shadowboxes to frame quilts. At the bottom of the box the backing board almost touches the glazing, at the top there is a few inches of space. This way part of the weight is being held by the backing board.

Stitching is always the best way to mount fabric. But allowing the weight to be supported by the backing will leave less weight on the threads.

I hope you understand what I mean.

good luck.
