Timeless Custom Picture Framing
Hi. I have a customer that brought in two paintings on Lamma skin from Peru. What is the best way to mount them? I thought of using thread in all four corners, mounted onto conservation corrugate. Would a mat board be better?

I think it depends on how they are going to be framed.
How valuable are they? What is the client's budget?

If you were to mat and glaze these, a variation on a platform mount would work, and no physical attachments are needed.
If they are to be straight framed, the material will have to be secured to the mount or stretcher.

Leather has it's own conservation issues and understanding those will help direct the framing.
From my understanding the primary culprit is a low humidity environment that could lead to desiccation and dry rot.

I like wally's suggestion of a tight-fit method, as I think he was alluding to. If there are already holes like I think I see on one from being stapled once before, then yeah you could do a sew mount instead. If you mount it onto matboard, or if you are matting in general, it is typically recommended to use NONBUFFERED rag mats in direct contact. The proteins in leather don't like the alkalinity typical of buffered matboards. In theory, I guess corrugated plastic would be safe, but the corrugated alpha-cellulose may also be buffered with calcium carbonate.

Thanks for your input. These are both going to be matted with glass.

I just framed up one of these nearly the same as yours, wish I took a pic....

The edges are interesting and we wanted to show them....
Piece was float mounted over an 8ply platform with Kozo hinges/Klucel G,
Museum glass....

similar to pic attached of abstract work....
