I tried attaching a military dog tag to matboard with electrical grade jet melt hot glue, and the tag popped right off.
It wouldn't even stick. He doesn't want to use a chain, or mylar strips, and this seems like it should work.
Have you done it, with success, and if so, how?

Did you clean the dog tag with a solvent prior to using hot glue?
Was the glue gun up to full temperature when used?
We have had failures from residual stuff on metal objects, and from a gun that heated the glue enough to flow, but not enough to bond.
This is with the 3M gun and electric grade low temp hot melt.

I used soap and water, because I didn't know if solvent would damage it.
If you've used solvent, what kind did you use?

It's electrical grade low temp hot melt. The sticks are several years old, so
might that make a difference? The only way we could get them was in a big
bag, and I rarely do this.

Alien Tape might work well. It sticks like crazy and can be removed.

Many adhesives lose bonding strength or become permanent over time, but I have not seen any information about how Alien Tape performs over a long period of time, or whether it is sensitive to ambient changes.

Alien Tape appears to be a brand of Nano tape.
Last time I saw Hugh Phibbs, at FrameCon in Worcester, Ma., his first words were "What do you know about Nano tape?"
It is totally reversible if you can overcome the bonding forces. The attachment is more like gravity or magnetism than chemical adhesion.
I figured it would be commercialized at some point. Hope the cart isn't preceding the horse.
To add to don't knows: how will the carrier perform over time?

Have you tried embedding a magnetic in the backing behind it? did that with an axe I had to frame once. Worked perfectly.

I think only the really old, round ones are aluminum. I believe the rest are stainless steel.

Stainless steel is sometimes magnetic, and other times not. Depends on the grade.

Getting back to the OP, maybe if you "ruuuuff-ed" it up a bit, you could get it to stick.

I know you have EZ Tach. That is a great way to attach dog tags.

Personally, I would go with cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and use 3M 9448A, even if I had to layer it up. They use it on aluminum blanks I get in and is solid stuff….problem may be if back is not flush and concave.
